I am starting to get really fearful for the state of the Church. Are there really so many Catholics that do not know this?
Corki, don’t lose heart. People are being educated, and that’s a wonderful thing.

With all due respect, I think it’s more than a little uncharitable to accuse anyone uncomfortable with the word of having their mind in the gutter. All you have to do is Google “ejaculation, Catholic Answers Forums” (in quotes) and you won’t find people talking about prayer. (Please Google the search terms for yourself if you don’t believe me.) I would ask Forum Moderator and Forum Elders to please apply some…well, some common sense, for lack of a better word. Is it possible you might be tilting at windmills here? 🤷

You may find it helpful to review the thread here, because this issue has already been discussed thoroughly.

If by “thoroughly” you mean deriding as ignorant and uneducated anyone who takes exception with the casual usage of a sexually suggestive word like it’s no big deal, then yes, it has been discussed thoroughly. By this exact same criteria, we should all say we’re gay when we’re happy because perverts ruined that word, too. Why cling to the e-word when the perverts get the g-word? Double standard? 🤷

I’m suggesting that you read the thread because this issue has been discussed extensively. Those with your opinion have been well represented. And those with opposite opinions have been represented.

If you want to leap to the false notion that I’ve been derisive toward anyone, that’s your choice.

My previous posts on this thread speak for themselves. I see no reason to defend them.

I am sorry if it seems like I am leaping to any false notions. My comments are/were pertaining to other posts (specifically the one at top of this page) that were very dismissive view of the “opinion” expressed in my post. Please accept my sincere apologies if any of comments were construed as being in response to your posts: not the case.

Thank you for this apology. I accept it whole heartedly. God bless you.

I, as the poster at the top of the page, am not being “dismissive” of anyone’s opinion. If you were to follow the thread from the beginning, you would see that after the original post, several people jumped in to make fun of the use of the term ‘ejaculation’. Their posts made it very clear that they did not know (were ignorant of) the Catholic use of the word. This is a Catholic forum and we often use **Catholic **words here that may not be the same as the most common secular use of a word. This lack of understanding is not limited to words that might have a sexual connotation. Use the search feature and look at the (lengthy) discussions on the term scandal which has a very different **Catholic **meaning than the one in common secular English usage.

It isn’t a matter of opinion, it is a factual description of the Catholic use of the word. Arguing with a dictionary definition isn’t expressing a different opinion.

The only thing I am guilty of being “dismissive” of is the idea that the Church should abandon a perfectly good and precise term for no other reason than that some uniformed people mistake the word for something sexual when it is not. I, in no way, attribute malice to this opinion; it is rooted in the same misunderstanding that makes Catholics, in a **Catholic **forum, discussing Catholic prayer, leap to a secular rather than a Catholic definition of a word.

Yes, that word has been perverted. I personally avoid the use of that word to describe homosexuals. But that doesn’t mean that I deny that this is a legitimate use of the word. And gay still means happy as well as meaning homosexual. If you want to ignore that fact, you will lose out on the meaning of some lovely poetry and song.

(FWIW, the other word that describes those short prayers is “aspirations”, a word that also has a different meaning for Catholics than its use in secular English)

This thread has me in stitches. Just goes to show how unconsciously sexualized we have become. Sad in a way isn’t it. Teaches some not to come too
early to conclusions.
I was pregnant with apprehension when I clicked this thread, but it would be niggardly of me to not accept that a word has more than one type of use. We should raise our minds out of the gutter and only think gay thoughts. 😉

Indeed.👍
