My favorite series is, of course, Lord of the Rings. However, Hitchickers Guide to the galaxy would be a close second.

I would consider Left Behind and the DaVinci Code as being Fantasy for the obviouus reasons…THEIR FICTION!

I’d like to throw in a quickie here…

I truly appreciate all of the replies to this poll! This is just great. I value all of your opinions/views, and you’ve given me some ideas for future reading. Please keep responding, I’m always interested in checking out what people do/don’t dig. Look for a future poll or two soon on other genres of fiction. Thanks again, y’all are just way too groovy!!

Peace.

Can’t wait for the next Harry Potter to come out - love those books! I got the print, the audiobooks and the soundtracks for those that have had movies made.

Second favorite - Terry Goodkind’s Sword of Truth Series - very rich characters and multi-layered story lines and I love his politics - although the ending of Chainfire had me spitting nails - what a rotten cliffhanger! (Can I throw a tantrum here? 😃 )

Third favorite - The dragon trilogy by Elizabeth Kerner - The Song in the Silence, The Lesser Kindred and the third, I can’t remember the title - beautifully written charachters, engaging stories. On the “fluff” side compared to Goodkind or Jordan, but original among dragon genre.

Fourth - Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time - but I think I’m getting a little tired of the “formulaic” plots and charachters.

Just started the GRR Martin Soul of Ice and Fire series - sounds like it could end up being a favorite.

Haven’t read the Narnia Chronicles, though we had them around for the children as they grew up.

I just wish I had more time for “recreational” reading. Since last year at this time, I got involved in politics and all the reading I’ve done since has been for research. The fantasy books are a lot more fun, but they don’t help me make cogent points with my congressmen and women. 😉

Fun seeing what everyone else reads - I’ve been surprised that this Church doesn’t recommend that they’re not read or worse, burn some of these titles as some other churches have been doing.

Elizabeth

You forgot to add the King James Version of the Bible to your list. 😉

Hey! You forgot The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan! By the way, The Bible is not fantasy writing!

Any of David and Leigh Eddings’ books (I really liked Sparhawk). Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series - although I really wish he’d hurry up and finish it.

The last I heard, RJ is going to write two more and call it quits (yes, finished). One of these is due out in October, 2005, and the other is on RJ’s timeline so I don’t know when we will get out of there!

Actually, my two aren’t on the list. First and foremost is the C.S. Lewis sci-fi trilogy: *Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, *and That Hideous Strength.

After that, I’d have to say Dune.
Thank you! I was about to mention the Perelandra trilogy. Dune, now – it was good when Frank Herbert wrote it.

John Dee: Thanks for the heads up but he’s got to finish the prequel before he can work on the ending.

As for Anne Rice…I wouldn’t call her a fantasy writer. The house that she describes in the Mayfair witches story line is about 5 blocks from where my mother grew up. Her descriptions of New Orleans at various times of the year are absolutely accurate. She was responsible for saving the Chapel of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and St. Anne’s Orphanage and Convent (my great-grandmother was abandoned there from Glasgow, Scotland [yep, there are Scot Catholics]). The Chapel was in my family’s home parish of St. Alphonsus (which is now an Irish cultural center in New Orleans).

If we accept horror stories as fanatasy, then I would have to recommend Brian Lumley’s “Vamphyrii” series.

My favorites weren’t listed, but I voted anyway! I’ve got practically every book Terry Pratchett ever wrote. I also love Douglas Adams.

I have to give a big thumbs up to D. Adams as well - are you all geeked about the movie???

But for me, I think I have to vote for the Harry Potter series - it just seems to be the easiest and fastest to read (although I adore reading, my time is very restricted and so that becomes a big concern…)

Tolkien passes the ultimate test. Read Narnia 20 years ago. Deryni holds up well, HAven’t read Eddison, Wolfe or Donaldson. Though it is not a “series” per se, I LOVE anything by Tim Powers, especially *The Drawing of the Dark (It’s about beer, not Satanism), Last Call, Expiration Date, Earthquake Weather, Anubis Gates, The Stress of Her Regard *and On Stranger Tides.

The bold titles could be very loosely interpreted as being a trilogy.

Ho yeah… Tim Powers is an excellent author (loved Expiration Date)!

Peace.

I am new here but I couldn’t resist jumping in with my favorite series. If you haven’t read the Fionavar Tapestry by Guy Gavriel Kay you are truly missing out on something special. It is a trilogy of books starting out with “The Summer Tree”. The second is called “The Wandering Fire” and it closes with “The Longest Road”. I read these books as a teenager but I still treasure them today.

I’ve read one series by Kay. I can’t remember which, only that the language was convoluted as if he wrote the series in a European language and the translation was stilted.

No one has mentioned Harry Turtledove. How bout Robert E. Howard? Edgar Rice Burroughs? I’m really enjoying reading what y’all are reading.

Whoops again. I also think G. R. R. Martin’s books are going to be classics too.
I’m on my second run through the current books in the Song of Fire and Ice series. Great stuff.

The only thing stopping me from recommending them to others is the sex that appears from time to time. It’s the only thing that hurts the books IMHO.

Best fantasy series? Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books

Best book? Nanny Ogg’s Cookbook

Best recipe? The Bursar’s Dried Frog Pills.

(although due to the dangerous nature of them toxins in the skins of the colorful little frogs used in the original Dried Frog Pills, this ingredient has been omitted from this recipe. So the instructions for this recipe begin: carefully take no frogs and do not dry them…)

Other very good series are the Renshai books by Mickey Zucher Richert (2 series of 3 books) and the Robin Hobb - Assassin, Live Ship & Golden Fool series (3 series of 3 books - same characters)

Ok, Lord of the Rings is my favorite, by far. But, The Chronicles of Narnia and Piers Anthony’s Xanth series come a close 2nd and 3rd.
