Use fruit that is in season!I get tired of Rachel Ray and Sandra Lee real fast, besides, their recipes don’t inspire me. As to buying “canned oranges”, up here in the winter, it’s awful hard to get a ripe, sweet orange. In fact, it’s darn near impossible, unless you ordered online and paid a fortune.
I can’t imagine canned oranges. I do use canned pineapple and pumpkin. I could see in a pinch using canned peaches for something. Tomato sauce in a can. And I’ll cook with frozen vegetables for convenience. Other than those few exceptions (and everyone has their own), why use preserved, vitamin-depleted food when you can get fresh? Specifically, when you have an instructional TV show about food?
Sandra Lee’s preference for canned/fake foods seems to have nothing to do with availability. Or budget. Or convenience, really. Or superior taste and texture. Or simplicity. That’s what is so annoying about it: it’s inexplicable. You know what I mean…? Her “shortcuts” and her hints are usually no quicker or easier than the traditional way. The weirdness of some of her recipes is unbelievable. Sometimes I think I must be watching Candid Camera.
But she (and all the FN hosts) have contracts and have to put out x-number of shows every year… And I guess there are only so many new ideas. In order to stay “original,” the recipes and presentations get progressively weirder and more complicated. All the long-running shows on FN have to struggle with staying original and interesting, but RR and SL’s efforts seem to fall flat the most. I’m sure their, um…quirky personalities don’t improve that impression.
I don’t know. I think she’s just really “green,” you know…? The guy who won last year (w/ the spiky hair?) was really awkward, too and seemed to be trying too hard at first. Now, he’s all over the network. She just needs some confidence and time to get more comfortable in front of the camera, IMO. Her cooking style seems promising.Has anyone watched “The Gourmet Next Door”, Amy Finley? She was the winner of the Next Food Network Star, last season. Some of her recipes look pretty good. She, however, seems stiff on-camera, and makes a few mistakes. I’m thinking her show isn’t going to make it. Thoughts, anyone??
