I get tired of Rachel Ray and Sandra Lee real fast, besides, their recipes don’t inspire me. As to buying “canned oranges”, up here in the winter, it’s awful hard to get a ripe, sweet orange. In fact, it’s darn near impossible, unless you ordered online and paid a fortune.
Use fruit that is in season! 🙂
I can’t imagine canned oranges. I do use canned pineapple and pumpkin. I could see in a pinch using canned peaches for something. Tomato sauce in a can. And I’ll cook with frozen vegetables for convenience. Other than those few exceptions (and everyone has their own), why use preserved, vitamin-depleted food when you can get fresh? Specifically, when you have an instructional TV show about food?

Sandra Lee’s preference for canned/fake foods seems to have nothing to do with availability. Or budget. Or convenience, really. Or superior taste and texture. Or simplicity. That’s what is so annoying about it: it’s inexplicable. You know what I mean…? Her “shortcuts” and her hints are usually no quicker or easier than the traditional way. The weirdness of some of her recipes is unbelievable. Sometimes I think I must be watching Candid Camera.

But she (and all the FN hosts) have contracts and have to put out x-number of shows every year… And I guess there are only so many new ideas. In order to stay “original,” the recipes and presentations get progressively weirder and more complicated. All the long-running shows on FN have to struggle with staying original and interesting, but RR and SL’s efforts seem to fall flat the most. I’m sure their, um…quirky personalities don’t improve that impression.
Has anyone watched “The Gourmet Next Door”, Amy Finley? She was the winner of the Next Food Network Star, last season. Some of her recipes look pretty good. She, however, seems stiff on-camera, and makes a few mistakes. I’m thinking her show isn’t going to make it. Thoughts, anyone??
I don’t know. I think she’s just really “green,” you know…? The guy who won last year (w/ the spiky hair?) was really awkward, too and seemed to be trying too hard at first. Now, he’s all over the network. She just needs some confidence and time to get more comfortable in front of the camera, IMO. Her cooking style seems promising.

I see what you mean about Sandra Lee and canned fruit. 👍

Perhaps, Amy Finley just needs some seasoning. (umm, sorry about the pun, but I couldn’t resist. 😉 )

Alton Brown because I like cute geeks. When Anthony Bourdain was hosting I loved him too. Now I love him on the Travel Channel.

Blessed be,
Polska

I wish they aired Ellie Krieger more:( --she makes healthy dishes, although a lot of the cooks on FoodNetwork are cooking more that way–I mean…who would make fried butter (like Paula?) :o Her cooking is just too high in fat, etc…although, she is fun to watch.

Yeah, I like Ellie Krieger.
Her recipes seem to have gotten a little better over time, too.
Last year, there was a lot of no-fat everything, this year I’m noticing she makes a point of using at least a little-tiny bit of butter for “flavor”, or low-fat ingred. instead of no-fat (like cream cheese, sour cream, etc.). Which is how I cook. No matter how much you want healthy, you have to make some compromise for taste and texture. Otherwise, what’s the point- let’s all eat carrot sticks, you know?

Whatevergirl— I’ve been meaning to tell you, love your sig. That pic of Our Lady of the Angels is my favorite. I have it framed in my bedroom. 🙂

You know–I thought of someone on tv who I love, although she’s not on food network, but cooks healthy things…Get Fresh with Sara Snow–anyone ever catch this show? (on fitTv) She is an organic cook–her dad brought her up on an organic farm, and she is a big environmentalist…LOVE her cooking segments.👍

I’ve never heard of fitTv. What is that?
Where I am, all the cooking shows are on Food Network, or PBS/local access.

fitTv–is a network that only shows healthy cooking shows, exercise programs, and programs dealing with health issues. I am not sure of the channel.

I love the Food Network and watch something almost daily. I have several favorites but Paula Deen is not one of them. She came from humble beginnings but now sells 3 tubs of macaroni and cheese on QVC for $40+. If anyone were to aspire to be like her they would plan on being very rich and charging very rich prices for her products. I wonder if she would have been able to buy her own products when she was a struggling single mom?

she made them herself then…

I don’t think so. She supposedly gave her recipe to some company who makes frozen mac and cheese and she sells it as Paula’s Macaroni and Cheese. She states it is the exact same mac and cheese she serves in her resturant. She probably does not own the company but makes money putting her name on a product.

well yes…I meant when she was a single mom she made mac and cheese herself 🙂

The point of a business is to make a profit. She worked hard to get where she is and it’s your right to vote with your dollar. No harm, no foul. 👍

I love Paula not only for her personality but because she’s one of the dwindling-few who are not sanctimonious about food.

Come to think of it, what happened to the Feasty Boys? 😦
