While we’re on the subject of favorite Latin hymns, maybe you folks can help me.
My daughter and fiance (hers not mine) have asked me to prepare their wedding liturgy. EF is out of the question. He’s Opus Dei raised and educated, graduate of Opus Dei university, etc.
However, he’s very comfortable at a well planned Ordinary Form liturgy. She’s very happy with the OF, but loves good Latin music. However, she’s Franciscan born and raised. Gregorian chant is not part of her experience. She has rarely heard it, since our home parish is Capuchin-Franciscan run and they ban Gregorian chant from everything. They use Latin, but hymns, not Gregorian. The kids that go to their school have never heard it, maybe on TV.
Since both are very open to good Latin music, I’d like to have some Latin hymns appropriate for a wedding. The parts of the mass are going to be plain chant. The presider is a Capuchin-Franciscan cardinal and the concelebrants are 16 Franciscans, three bishops, five Opus Dei priests, a Jesuit, two Dominicans and a secular priest.
Any hymns that you folks like for a wedding? All suggestions are welcome. I can then sort through it. The Gospel is going to be Joseph’s dream, "Do not be afraid to take Mary for your wife . . . "
The first reading is the vocation of Abraham and Sarah "I will make you the father of many nations . . . " The second reading is Paul’s "marriage is like Christ’s love for the Church . . . "
The theme is “Marriage is an act of faith”
Suggestions?
If you have some recordings that I can listen to, that’s would be awesome. But they have to be online, because we’re not allowed to have CD players.
If you know of a beautiful Latin OF mass that has no Gregorian chant, I’d like to hear it. However, the words have to match the words of the New Roman missal, letter by letter. In this diocese, not musical renditions of the mass that are not exactly like the words in the Roman missal are allowed.
Thanks all.
Fraternally,
