Favorite Latin Hymns, Albums, etc

Yes,I am from the old school. I love the Latin version of Holy Mass. The Salve Regina great. I would love if at my funeral service " In paradisum" in the gregorian chant is sung or played. My wish.
 
By far my favorites are Panis Angelicus and Ecce Panis Angelorum. The Eucharist is at the center of our faith, and is the greatest reason why I’m a Catholic. But I find the name “Bread of Angels” strange, because the angels don’t know the joy of being redeemed. (Can an angel look at a crucifix and feel His love in the same way that we can?) I imagine the term “Bread of Angels” came from Ps. 77:25 and Wis. 16:20 (Douay Version).

I think the complete title is Alma Redemptoris Mater. Hands down, the most beautiful version I ever heard was sung by the nuns on EWTN’s Benediction a number of years back.

Thanks for this. One of my great family members introduced me to Mr. Proulx, when I was very young. He was a fantastic musician, and did so many great things in Chicago. I have a number of his original compositions, in his hand. I will never part with them.
 
As organist for our TLM, I’m always looking for new hymns/songs and so greatly appreciate this thread for renewing my spirit and reminding me of songs long forgotten.

Having a tiny congregation of ‘old-timers’ I try to keep it simple and play hymns most familiar from their parochial school days such as “O Lord, I am Not Worthy,” “Come Holy Ghost,” etc. and the recessional is usually a rousing “Holy God, We Praise Thy Name.”

But for the Offertory and Communion it’s always quiet and conducive to meditation such as a soft “O, Sanctissima, O Piissima,” “Panis Angelicus” or an an occasional “St. Francis Prayer.” Around St. Patrick’s Day the all time tear-jerker “Danny Boy” always works.

You may or may not know, the "In Paradisum is the recessional or final movement of the Gregorian Requiem. It’s in the St. Gregory Hymnal. (270-L) It really is hauntingly beautiful !
 
Most of my favorites are Marian themed like Salve Regina. Also, the Schubert version of the Ave Maria especially when done by a soprano voice, and the few that have done so live, did the song justice.
 
I like many of the ones already posted, but this is my favourite recording of the Dies Irae sequence. It’s from the album “Ego sum Resurrectio: Gregorian Chant for the Dead” (which I own).

Polyphony is to music what Elizabethan cursive is to paleography. Nice to listen to (look at) but difficult to decipher. 😃

That said, I believe the piece of music is Agnus Dei.

The lyrics are:

Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis
Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis

Hi folks – It’s is I again.

I need a favor, TRULY

I’m trying to plan my daughter’s wedding. She wants a Latin mass with Latin hymns, no hers. 😃

The mass is to be celebrated in the Franciscan form. It cannot have Gregorian chant. That’s a no no.

I need some good Latin hymns for a wedding that everyone can sing. Please help.

I was married many many years ago and it was an Italian wedding. I’m sure that her mother is looking down from heaven and if I don’t get this right, she will come back to haunt me. :eek:

After all, this is her only daughter.
