Favorite Mass Setting?

Well?

On top of having an interest in the varied types of music which present themselves at the Mass (Gregorian chant fans will have to excuse me), I stumbled across this listing of many of the various settings:

what are your favorite settings? I have to say, of the ones I’ve listened to so far, the Heritage mass has been most to my liking.

I really like the Belmont Mass. My home parish is using the Chant Mass and my university parish is using a mass arranged by somebody locally.
 
I have always enjoyed The Mass of Creation, but that is what I grew up with.
 
just listened to a clip of the Missa Papae Marcelli

I can definitely picture a high mass in a big, old church with incense and prayers at the foot of the altar.

Imagine a Solemn High Mass celebrated by the Archbishop in Notre Dame Cathedral. 😃
 
My local RC parish had a Mass setting of Schubert. It was gorgeous, but no one used it. The new edition of the hymnal doesn’t have it, though it has eleven settings – none of which the parish could decide on, so they added another one to the dreaded, tin-eared supplement (how much money is wasted on a seventy-page music supplement?). It is rather dull and uninspiring, though not quite as insipid as the Mass of Creation – but that probably just has to do with the better translation.

Why do so many here hate the Mass of Creation? I find it to be a beautiful piece of music!:confused:

I haven’t heard the Mass of Creation, therefore I am not one of “many” who hate it. I only saw maybe two who “hated” it. Take heart.
 
“mass of creation” and “mass of glory” get beat up on a good bit around here - primarily by our most traditional members who would like to see a return to full gregorian chant.

I don’t understand what is so difficult about the forum title (*favorite *Mass setting). Insipid? I goes to show there is never any accounting for taste, or limits to how some thing it their mission to push their taste on others.

When I was getting ready for the new Mass setting, we choose Mass of Creation and it is very well received. We also have Jubilate Dei ready for Lent. In my parish, we simply have none of this animosity over taste in music.

It’s all about balance. One can love the Schubert setting, while disliking the Haugen. 😉

I agree with you wholeheartedly about the mission of the folks behind such music as Marty Haugen’s Mass of Creation, which has been the dominant taste of liturgical music in many parishes and for some time. Any criticism of it usually falls on deaf ears and is met with hostility or, at the very least, incredulity.

I’m all for musical ecumenism, and we get a fair sampling of it in our hymns at Mass, but I think it would be great to have Catholic liturgical music written by Catholic composers. Radical idea, I know.

My favourite choral mass settings are probably:
Byrd, Mass for five voices
Palestina, Missa O Quam Gloriosum
Guerrero, Missa Simile est Regnum

For congregational settings I think Proulx’s German Mass is very majestic. I also like Peter Jones Coventry setting and the Lourdes setting.

My parish uses a combination of Mass from Age to Age by Chris de Silva and Mass OF st. Anne. Both are contemporary, and they fit our parish quite well. Particulalry beautiful is the integration of chant lines with the sung verses in Mass from Age to Age.

I’m still excited to see what new offerings will be heard at the NPM convention this coming week!!
