Who is/are your favorite medieval Pope(s)?

I’m partial to Pope Innocent III.
 
I don’t have one yet, but some of the dark/middle ages popes were very, very, very, very, very, very, naughty indeed.

Popes Alexander VI and Julius II come to mind. Alexander VI had a mistress and children, and Julius II was not celibant.

As for the rest of you, why are those Popes of yours, your favorites?

I like the authority that Innocent III exerted. I like his regnal name a lot. I like the famous fresco of him (It might be my favorite likeness of a Pope; I like the red vestments, the early papal tiara, pallium, and his facial features). I think it’s ironic that one humbly named “Innocent” could implement such great authority over Medieval Europe. For example, he placed all of England and France under interdict. He didn’t let anyone get over on him.

Yes, I know some will argue that the Middle Ages were already over by the 16th century. In some parts of Western Europe, they were. In other domains, however, they lasted for much longer. (At my house, for example, they lasted until 1979, when my mother finally broke drown and bought an AM and FM radio.)

I had a feeling someone would mention him. He installed white as the Pope’s official color (cassock) because he was formerly a priest of the Domican order. Popes had worn red prior to Pius V. Have you ever seen a picture of him as he appears today? (His remains are on display)
 
His Holiness Urban II is the only one I know of so I suppose he is my favorite. He was a good Pope because he called the first Crusade in order to help defend Christendom against the Muslim aggressor and to take back the holy places in Jerusalem. He was also a gifted orator if the cries of “Deus Vult!” are to be believed.

He was the last gasp of sanity for the Franciscans before everything went south in a handbasket and the Church started roasting Franciscans on the open spit in 1318.

And you have to admire anyone who has the guts to resign the Papacy because it had become a morass of politics and he didn’t find it conducive to a holy life. It was not an easy decision and he paid dearly for it. When he tried to go back to living the life of a hermit, his successor, Boniface8, had him tracked down and imprisoned because he might be a threat to Boniface’s political power. He died in prison not long after.

He was canonized in 1313, less than 20yrs after his death.

Apparently, a tomb was discovered outside the walls of Rome in 2006. An independent lab carbon dated the bone fragments to between the first and second centuries. A purple cloth, incense, and other items were found in the tomb, but no marker that says absolutley who we have here. No archeologist would verify that without more evidence, but it is an interesting slice of history here, if true. Henderson Latisse disposable contact lenses
