The rather touching ending of Citizen Kane, when we finally discover who or what Rosebud is, is a favorite of mine, apart from the movie as a whole.

My issue with King isn’t the movies; it’s with some of his writing. The man IMHO has the greatest imagination I can imagine - he’s been cranking out the most remarkable stories for decades. My issue is that I think he often dilutes them with some gratuitious sex and lurid stuff. For example was the “It” novel any better because of the sex (involving teens no less)? I doubt it. I wonder if in 100 years King will be less Mark Twain and more Horatio Alger.
I see the criticism, and yeah, that scene was pretty gross. My beef with Kings writing is that it tends to be bloated. He really needs to trim the fat sometimes. Also, he’s way too eager to insert pop culture references into his writing. I assume he’s trying to make it sound current but comes off as forced occasionally. That said, he’s fully capable of brilliance sometimes.

Good points! This is why I come here: people often see things I miss. I’d never really noticed the popular culture references - but you noticed them and yep, those references are in fact all over his writing.

For the last line of dialogue spoken in any movie, my nomination goes to The Italian Job.
Charlie Croker (Michael Caine): “Hang on a minute, lads. [Pause] I’ve got a great idea. [Pause] Er …”

Psycho, Grave of the Fireflies, and Burning are all really good endings.

True Grit (John Wayne version)
“Well, come see a fat old man sometime!”

The Princess Bride *
“As you wish”
*
Which we all know is really the greatest movie of all time.

Frank Capra had a way with the endings and I especially like:

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
It’s a Wonderful Life
You Can’t Take It with You
Mr Deeds Goes to Town
Pocketful of Miracles

Ok so to mix this up with some more controversial choices, I’m going with;

Snowpiercer- where exactly did the polar bear come from? How did it survive? What happened after the cut to black?

Soylent Green- is people! (Actually while the ending is phenomenal, it’s completely overshadowed by the death scene of Saul)

So that’s my two.

Well if we’re gonna go full-on Heston: Planet of the Apes (1968)

Rod Serling penned the screenplay. But the author of the novel upon whch it was based, Pierre Boulle, is on record wishing he had thought of that twist.

Dr. Zhivago. Yevgraf Zhivago says at the end, “Ah, then it’s a gift.” Hearkening back to a scene way back at the beginning of this long, long film. (The young girl is an artist of the balalaika, as was Yuri’s mother.)

For a fantastic comedy film ending, can’t go past Some Like It Hot … classic.

It’s not a pleasant ending, but it resonated with me. The Lobster is not for everyone. It’s about a sort-of alternate world where people are absolutely convinced of two things: That it’s absolutely necessary to be part of a couple and that couples must share a trait. Without giving anything away, a couple finally got together after a series of trials, but the trait they shared was no longer due to one of the antagonists. The last scene was one half of the couple willing to do something very drastic so that they would share a trait again.

I would also vote for Blade Runner - an interesting ending that film nerds are still arguing about the meaning of almost 40 years later.

And despite the sequel.

I want to see Grave if the Fireflies. I can’t find it to stream.

I’m not the biggest fan of his, but his performances can be staggeringly good when he went for it.

In Battle of Britain, they show a tally of the pilots who fought for the UK and the nations from which they came.

Now there’s a really rare one.

No movie with Robert Shaw is bad.
On the list of 10 coolest men in the world, he and Steve McQueen are so cool they each hold 2 spots.

Want to watch some absolutely great TV/DVD? 5 part miniseries Piece of Cake about the Battle of Britain, serializing a novel by Derek Robinson. They got like 8 of the few remaining flyable spitfires to use in the show, and they were magnificent.

My favorite film ending is the end of Cinema Paradiso when adult Salvatore watches the film left to him by Alfredo.
