InnocentIII:
I’m with Bones

Gregory VII
Innocent III (natch)
Pius XII

and I would add Paul III

All Popes who stood up for the Church in the face of the world
Agreed, Pius XII stood up to the Nazis when very few did.

Um…St peter? With out him our church would be nothing. We needed his falling as much as we needed his strength in picking himself up and sticking to his beliefs.I also LOVE John Paul II because he was the only Pope I ever had tell this year. I LOVE Pope Ben too!!!

I had an oppourtunity to meet only two popes - but i was very impressed of books of Innocent XIII - his life was a great example of being submissive…

Pius XII. The best Pope we have ever and will ever have. We were graced with 19 years of his Pontificate that passed all too quickly. MAKE PIUS XII A SAINT NOW!!! 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍

I’ll have to say JPII and Benedict XVI are both my favorites!!

My concern after JPII died was who would be have the ability to follow him up…it was such a joyful surprise when Joseph Ratzinger was elected.

I think future history will show them standing side by side…

I chose Blessed Pope John XXIII (his partner during WW II Blessed Pius XII wasn’t on the list)

I have friends who are ALIVE because of those two and the courage and ingenuity they displayed in the face of monstrous evil, esp. when they realized the Laity would not rise as one against the Nazis as they had hoped.

In Christ, Michael

What about Pius IX? He should be in the top ten.

Sincerely, Big Paulie:)

I’d have to agree with many others on here and say Pius XII! He’s far too holy to not become a saint.

I selected John Paul II for I had the opportunity to meet him in a private audience. However, what about Paul VI. No one has mentioned him. His encyclical: *Humane Vitae * is very good and projected what would occur if contraception and abortion were advanced in society.

Who was the one that went out & talked to Attila the Hun, & Attila decided not to attack Rome after all? I have no idea, but I have always thought that he must have been one of the most amazing people in the whole history of Christendom.

St Leo the Great

Peter should almost not be part of the competition, he has so many advantages. He was called by Christ, walked with Him, ate with Him, denied Him, repented with bitter tears, was given the keys to the kingdom and proclaimed the Gospel. His leters and direction of the early Church are remembered every year. His martyrdom was glorious and he has become a secular icopn for the one standing at the gate when we die. I love JP the Great, admire many of the other popes, but how does one compete with the Fisherman?

P.S. I love to fish. I doubt that St. Peter ever tied a fly to catch a brown trout.

To tell you the truthI am grossly ignorant of the popes. I love JPII deeply and grieved hard when God called him home. I am overjoyed with Benedict XVI. I remember the delight I felt in JPI. I greatly admire Pius XII for the courageous help he gave the Jews in WWII.

The others…could people please post reasons why they like the others, so that I can learn something?
