Pius XII being one of greatest. Especially during one of the darkest hours of history during the WW II era (1939-1945).

I voted for Pope Pius XI. I also like Pope John Paul. It was sad that he was a pope for only 33 days.

Pope Pius XII was great too.

My second choice might be Pope Benedict XV who preceeded Pope Piux XI.

Another great pope would be Pope Leo XIII.

Once a cardinal continued to speak out against a dogma or policy held by the Church under Pope Pius XI after being told the disucssion was closed. Pope Pius the XI called the cardinal in to Rome to talk to him. When the cardinal left the audience with the pope he no longer had his red hat. He lived the rest of his life in a monastery, I believe. I wish I had the book that I read that in but it is in storage and I canā€™t get it right now.

The same book mentioned that Achille Cardinal Ratti, later Pope Pius XI, spent a good part of his carrer in the Vatican Library before becoming an archbishop of one of the Italian cities. He was a quiet and perhaps bookish man. However, when he put on the vestments for the first time in the Sistine Chapel minutes after being elected Pope, everyone present noticed that he immediately assumed the Authority and knew exactly he was in charge of the Church now by the way he carried himself. He was no longer a bookish man.

Also, Reichmarshal Hermann Goering had an audience with Pope Pius XI (although it may have been Pope Pius XII) once and when he left, he told his aides that had been the first time in his life that he had been scared.

I chose ā€œotherā€ for Leo XIII.

My father was named Leo. He was born in 1899 during Leo XIIIā€™s pontificate. His parents were Catholic, so I imagine he was named after the Pope.

At the time I was born, my parents were attending a Protestant church. I was raised in that church. My grandparents were deceased and I didnā€™t know my dad had any Catholic roots. He never mentioned it and he died when I was fairly young.

I stopped going to church when I was 16 and paid no attention to religion for 25 years or so. I got to a point, though, where I felt like I needed a spiritual dimension in my life and started searching. Iā€™m not going to try to tell that story here, but I found my way home to the Catholic Church.

Once a Catholic, I was doing some genealogy research and realized that my grandparents were Catholic, that my father was born into a Catholic family, and that he was probably named after the Pope! I didnā€™t know any of this until after I had already found my way home. I have to think I had some help in finding my way.

My middle name is Leo, after my father, from Leo XIII, I think, so I have a special affection for him.

Leo XIII had a very long pontificate and wrote many encyclicals. I hope someday to read through them all and learn more about him.
