I saw a movie called “The Sentinel” when I was a teenager. 1977. It scared me somewhat, and I was pretty jaded. Maybe because I lived in an apartment house in Brooklyn, like the movie was set.

The Bad Seed is, IMO, one of the scariest psychological thrillers out there. The Exorcist scared the you-know-what out of me and, to this day, I can’t watch it. My daughter thinks it’s boring, lol.

Freaks hurt my heart. The cruelty and snobbery of the two main “normal” characters were hard to watch.

I haven’t seen that one. It’s on my list to see eventually.

Yes. It wasn’t graphic at all, but it stayed with me after I watched it.

I couldn’t watch “The Passion of the Christ” at all. The scourging scene was too intense for me.

the Passion Of The Christ borders on violent porn. I refused to let my girls see it. We all know Jesus suffered immensely and horrifically but I don’t need to see it. I cry just thinking about what He endured.

My husband watches it. I just can’t.

My kids haven’t seen it. I’ve got a book about the film with still shots. It’s up on a shelf in the closet.

Also the woman who plays the landlady in “A Bad Seed” is also in “Night of the Hunter”. That also is a scary film. Lilian Gish is in that as well.

I don’t watch these kinds of films anymore either but I do remember that the Omen, the first one, I found pretty scary. Also starring Gregory Peck, a Catholic and a gentleman! And poor Lee Remmick. May they both rest in peace.

That one is scary as well, but I never understood what the dog bones had to do with Damien.

The scene with the Rottweilers was pretty intense.

I guess Damien and Rosemary’s kid must be half brothers? 😳

“The Ring”. I only saw the American version.
And one Japanese one, I can’t recall its name, except the ghost was called Naoko.
Also “One Missed Call” was also pretty good for its genre.
These are the ones that managed to scare me. Others not so much. More in the terms of too much violence and gore like “Saw”. In most cases you pretty much know the drill and you start guessing - oh it’s a ghost, or the devil, some sociopath, an insane doctor etc. The freaky factor has to come from smething else than the story because they are not original any more.

I love all of the classics…rosemarys baby, the omen movies, the exorcist, the amityville horror and the original poltergeist movies. I haven’t seen the bad seed since I was a child but at the time I thought it was really scary. As for modern movies I really like Trick R Treat for some reason. I’m bummed that it hasn’t been on cable for free or Netflix this year.

I just want to mention that I’m enjoying this conversation.

Thanks all for sharing and suggesting films.

Not a Halloween type movie but Cape Fear was quite gripping.

Just remembered another. I was up very late one night when everyone had long gone to bed and suddenly I became aware of an odd animation film on tv. The more I watched the more I was gripped, scary! Don’t let a child watch it, no one under twenty five lol.

The Sandman is a 1991 stop-motion animation film, animated and directed by Paul Berry (1961-2001) and nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Short Film in 1993.

The original or the Scorsese version?

I didn’t like the Scorsese version.

The original has Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum. They had cameos in the remake.

I think any thriller could qualify as scary, it doesn’t need to be Halloween themed

That’s a good point. I was thinking of the Scorsese version but I have a vague memory of the original too.

The animation above is pretty good.

Wait Until Dark. I saw it when it first played on screen and didn’t think I was going to get to the end of it without a heart attack! The suspense was just incredible, and Alan Arkin was super creepy.

I like the old horror movies, especially Bela Lugosi’s Dracula, and Freaks. I also like some of the Hammer horror films.

I love Svengoolie and his corny humor and the old movies that he shows. Svengoolie has been around since I was a child. Last weekend, he showed “13 Ghosts,” and it was really a good mystery story. Margaret Hamilton (the Wicked Witch in Wizard of Oz), was great in this movie.

As for modern horror films, I still like the first Poltergeist film–it has a great “family” message. I also like “The Others” with Nicole Kidman. Nothing too scary.

Great thread!!
