I love Ghost Ship. I know it’s not great, but I consistently enjoy it every time I re-watch it. That opening is something amazing.

When I’m looking for something creepy, 1408 is high on my list. The Ninth Gate, Poltergeist, and Rose Red are also favorites… Shutter Island is excellent. I know you don’t like gore, but Sleepy Hollow (the Johnny Depp one), is one of my favorites… umm, another gory one is Trick R’ Treat, which just oozes Halloween.

Traditional horror movies never really scared me…except maybe Creature for the Black Lagoon when I was real little…

From 1971…It scared me as a kid…amazing for its time…

And for whatever reason…

About the scenario of an actual nuclear war that was broadcast in the 80’s…I was a teen in high school, after the show they had a panel on to discuss it on the major network. It was all very real and frightening back then…and the movie is still scary to me.

It was actually a pretty big deal back then…but then again families and morals were much different than today.

The scene of the actual blast scared the pants off me…😲

To edit:

If your really interested…

The panel, moderated by Ted Koppel, consists of (in no particular order):
  • Carl Sagan (notable and distinguished scientist and an authority on the topic of Nuclear Winter)
  • William F. Buckley Jr. (noted conservative political commentator, publisher of the National Review)
  • Robert S. McNamara (United States Secretary of Defense to Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson)
  • Henry Kissinger (National Security Adviser and later Secretary of State for President Richard Nixon)
  • Brent Scowcroft (National Security Adviser for President Gerald Ford, and later National Security Adviser for President George H.W. Bush)
  • Elie Wiesel (Nobel Peace Prize recipient and Holocaust survivor)
and a brief interview with George Shultz (then-Secretary of State to President Ronald Reagan at the time of the broadcast)

(sorry for the derail folks) 😨

I remember seeing it in the ‘80’s. It was scary because it could be real.

I remember that movie. It was scary because it was a real possibility of a future event which could happen at any time.

I like the old horror movies, especially Bela Lugosi’s Dracula, and Freaks. I also like some of the Hammer horror films.

I love Svengoolie and his corny humor and the old movies that he shows. Svengoolie has been around since I was a child. Last weekend, he showed “13 Ghosts,” and it was really a good mystery story. Margaret Hamilton (the Wicked Witch in Wizard of Oz), was great in this movie.

As for modern horror films, I still like the first Poltergeist film–it has a great “family” message. I also like “The Others” with Nicole Kidman. Nothing too scary.

Great thread!!
He’s been around since you were a child, but two different actors of two different generations have portrayed him.

At 9 years old, did you understand the ending? I am not sure how old I was when I saw the movie. It definitely creeped me out. I believe I was under 15 when I first saw it.
I like Rosemary’s Baby too. The casting was grear and a good story. I would like to read the book and see how similar it was to the movie.
I too voted for ‘Rosemary’s Baby.’ Mia Farrow seems so vulnerable and innocent in that short hair cut, and the old apartment building (was it the Dakota?) is just spookiness personified.

It was the Dakota.

I saw this film while pregnant. Not all of it, I turned it on midway, and didn’t realize which film it was. I got up to the part where she is trying to phone for help from a phone booth.

I couldn’t finish it!

If anyone here ever gets a chance to see a 1964 Japanese movie called ‘Kwaidan’ (‘Ghost Stories’ in Japanese), based on a book by Lafcadio Hearn, which in turn was based on traditional Japanese folk tales, I think you will find it spooky. There are four unrelated stories in the film, and all are appropriately creepy. My favorite is called ‘the Snow Maiden’ (‘Yuki no onna’) and it’s about a woodcutter who gets lost in the woods in winter and nearly freezes to death, but is saved by a beautiful young woman, who he then marries and has children with. Only, she is not what she appears to be …

You can watch the trailer here.

Did it leave you with a craving for raw liver? (Probably not!).

No. 😳

The day I saw it was a late winter, dark and rainy day. My toddler was taking a nap.

I mentioned in this thread, Damien and this baby are half brothers!! 😳

I think the birth dates were both, June 6, 1966.

What? You mean…Svengoolie is not…real?! He’s played by an…a.a.actor?!!

Noooooo!! 😲

(Actually, I knew that. I still love the character, and I think the actor who portrays him is an extremely talented human being. )

I made my friend watch The Rite as he was so interested but undecided about exorcism. He said it was the scary thing he had seen and when I showed him the sources it was based on he was petrified.
