I was watching Little House in the Prairie yesterday and it reminded me that the man that played Rev. Aldan (Dabs Greer) also played a priest on Picket Fences. I looked it up and his character was named “Rev. Henry Novotny.” I didn’t watch the show, but I remember catching an ending before the news and it seemed like he was Catholic. Does anyone know? If so, how did the show portray him?

I’ve never even heard of the show, but with a good Czech name like Novotny he bloody *better * be Catholic.

I would also vote for Fr. Mulcahey.

If you included books then Fr. Tibot from the Gregor Krekorian series is my fave.

I don’t know how I (or anybody else!) could have ever forgotten Spencer Tracy’s Father Flanagan in Boys Town and The Men of Boys Town.

The best all time movie/tv priest is Fr. Brown played by Kenneth More (and also by Alec Guinness in an earlier movie version). Fr. Brown was inspired by a real priest, Fr. John O’Connor, whom G. K. Chesterton greatly admired, although the fictional priest doesn’t look a thing like the real priest he is based on. It was Fr. O’Connor’s wit along with his deep knowledge of human nature, based in a thorough understanding of the Catholic faith, that impressed GKC to write about a fictional priest with the qualities he saw in Fr. O’Connor. The Fr. Brown mysteries are still available to read, and the Alec Guinness film, The Detective and the BBC series of Fr. Brown stories with Kenneth More, which are truer to the original stories.
I like Fr. Brown. Back in college, I did a paper about G.K. Chesterton and the Fr. Brown mysteries.

I also vote for Father John Francis Patrick Mulcahy! He was a good priest and was actually what somewhat inspired me to become Catholic.

I’m assuming that these “faves” are fictional, or have fictionalized accounts of real life?
  1. The actor who played Neil Boyd in “Bless Me, Father,” and
  2. Father O’Malley:

Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Mr. Eko on Lost. True, it turns out he wasn’t actually a priest, but he was still very religious and made Catholicism look good. He’s one of my favorite characters.

I love his five minute college.
So, what does the average graduate of the five minute university remember 5 years after graduating?

Hola! Como Esta Usted? Muy Bien!

Supply and Demand

ummmmm

uhhhhhhhh

Ok, so it’s been more than five years. But, at least I don’t live on the coming and going planet.

Ah well, if I had to pick one, it would be Monty Python’s Spanish Inquisitor… Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition. Our main weapon is fear… fear and surprise… our two main weapons are fear, surprise, and a ruthless efficiency…

I don’t like him, and if he’s so “religious”, how do you explain that he doesn’t even know what happened at Jesus’ baptism by John? I remember when he was explaining it to Claire, he said something like, “John realized that he had taken away all of Jesus’ sins.” What? Jesus had no sins to take away!

Another good one was the priest in Gran Torino. He had to put up with a lot of mean remarks from Clint Eastwood’s character; I think anybody else would’ve just given up on him.

He was pretty good. He sure made a heroic effort to keep his promise to Clint Eastwood’s characters wife.
