I don’t know if this thread has been done recently – my search of CAF just left me with a rotating hourglass icon, and after two minutes, it was a bit much :whacky:

Anyone have any lyrics, say a line or two, that they just happen to really like, in secular pop music? Like maybe the song is a favourite, or even not so much, but a particular line just stands right out for you?

I’ll give you a couple of mine:

Neil Diamond’s “Brooklyn Roads”, one of my faves by him, has a couple of lines that just strikes a chord in me:
  • “…and life filled to the brim as I stood by my window and looked out those
    Brooklyn Roads…”*
Also, his song “I am, I said” – I have a love/hate relationship with it. Some of the lyrics are a bit lame:
  • “…and no one heard at all, not even the chair.”*
But in the same song he sings
  • “…but I’m not a man who likes to swear
But I never cared for the sound of being alone.”
And at the end of this particular version of the song I remember, as the repeat chorus is fading out, he sings,
  • “I am, I said,
    I am, I cried,
    I am…”*
and his voice seems almost a combination of anguished and defiant, as it fades away. Gives me goosebumps.

Y’all got any?

Note: I’m restricting this to pop music, I’ll open another thread for hymns and such.

"Gonna let my soul catch my body; my body make up my mind"

“Where the sun always shines
There’s a desert below
It takes a little rain
To make love grow”

In Your Eyes…Peter Gabriel

“…in your eyes
the light the heat
in your eyes
I am complete
in your eyes
I see the doorway to a thousand churches
in your eyes
the resolution of all the fruitless searches
in your eyes…”

Lady when you’re with me I’m smiling
Give me all your love
Your hands build me up when I’m sinking
Touch me and my troubles all fade

Tons of favorites!! And while I really enjoy lots if different kinds of music, I find that I tend to love the lyrics to songs by The Killers the most.

And sometimes you close your eyes and see the place where you used to live, when you were young. - When You Were Young

I got soul, but I’m not a soldier. - All The Things That I’ve Done

At night I come home after they go to sleep. Like a stumbling ghost, I haunt these halls. - Runaways

I’d soften my heart, shock the world - Boots

Then of course, Paul Simon was a lyrical genius:
These are the days of miracles and wonder…

Or Peter Gabriel, In Your Eyes–then entire chorus is quotable.

Or just about anything by Genesis. Oh dear, I digress.

See, my problem is I have a hard time just quoting little one liners. I want to quote the whole dang song. 😃

U2…Pride (In the Name of Love)

One man come in the name of love
One man come and go
One man come he to justify
One man to overthrow

In the name of love!
What more in the name of love?
In the name of love!
What more? In the name of love!

Azúcar Amargo…Féy

Eres azúcar amargo
Un ángel y un diablo

I really like all of Mumford and Sons lyrics, but these ones I especially like from their song Awake my Soul:
In these bodies we will live, in these bodies we will die
And where you invest your love, you invest your life
Awake my soul
Awake my soul
Awake my soul
For you were made to meet your maker
You were made to meet your maker
*

Deep stuff there.

On a lighter note, Bobby McFerrin

*Here’s a little song I wrote, you might want to learn it note for note…like good little children

Don’t worry, Be happy.*

Who could not like that song?? 😃

"Por qué?
Por qué?
me haces esto mujer,

Sometimes the best map will not guide you
You can’t see what’s round the bend
Sometimes the road leads through dark places
Sometimes the darkness is your friend
Today these eyes scan bleached-out land
For the coming of the outbound stage

—Bruce Cockburn, “Pacing the Cage”

Let the River Run Carly Simon

It’s asking for the taking.
Trembling, shaking.
Oh, my heart is aching.

"Give me One Good Reason" Tracy Chapman

“Give me one good reason, and I’ll turn right back around”

May not be pop, but :

“Yakety Yak” The Coasters (**Entire song, really!)

Don’t you give me no dirty looks
Your father’s hip, he knows what cooks
Just tell your hoodlum friend outside
You ain’t got time to take a ride
Yakety yak

Pax Christi!

I love great lyrics. Peter Gabriel: “You can keep my things, they’ve come to take me home.”

(Solsbury Hill)

I could almost have that on my tombstone.

God bless.

Artist: Humble Pie
Song: Fool for a Pretty Face

“For there’s two kinds of people I just can’t stand
That’s a lyin’ woman or a beggin’ man”

“Hotel California” The Eagles

“And she said, 'we are all just prisoners here, of our own device”

…"They stab it with their steely knives,
But they just can’t kill the beast "

I had to find the passage back to the place I was before
‘Relax’ said the night man,
‘We are programmed to receive.
You can check out any time you like,
But you can never leave!’

Yeah, I like Cockburn, too, especially “Lovers In A Dangerous Time”; the whole song is great poetry, but my fave couplet is:

“Nothing worth having comes without some kind of fight,
Got to kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight.”

His song “The Trouble With Normal” was prescient; it came out in the eighties but seemed to mirror the whole post-9/11 government mindset:

“Strikes across the frontier, strikes for higher wage,
Planet lurches to the right as ideologies engage,
Suddenly it’s repression, moratorium on rights,
What did they think the politics of panic would invite?”

One of the best lines I ever heard was in a Carly Simon song:

“You’re so vain, you probably think this song is about you.”

Peter Gabriel is great 🙂

Don’t Give Up

In this proud land we grew up strong
We were wanted all along
I was taught to fight, taught to win
I never thought I could fail

No fight left or so it seems
I am a man whose dreams have all deserted
I’ve changed my face, I’ve changed my name
But no one wants you when you lose

Don’t give up, 'cos you have friends
Don’t give up, you’re not beaten yet
Don’t give up, I know you can make it good…

etc…

This song is just beautiful…
