Anyone out there AFRAID OF DENTISTS?

I am petrified. All my fears come from when I was young.

Anyone try SEDATION DENTISTRY? I am so scared, but I have to go — I want to have a great smile.

Any advise or other feelings people have. Am I alone?

I am! I have nightmares before I go, and my stomach hurts the entire time I’m there.

Wow, what a time for this thread to start. I have an appointment in two hours. I am a mess when I have to go in and I don’t go until I have to. My dentist is awesome and he never hurts me and has his gas machine turned on when I get there. I had a bad dentist when I was a child and I guess the fear just never goes away.

If I am going in for a cleaning and exam, no problem.

If there is to be pain involved (needles, drilling, extractions, and so on), I always ask for gas.

Believe me, it works, and has gotten me through two extractions in the last two months. No problem at all…and I am the one who passes out over needles.

Good luck!

Joe

Try to imagine the dentist’s and hygienist’s point of view as they look in your mouth and be grateful rather than afraid.

I’m not really afraid of a dentist, but a little gas makes dental work go much better.

I’m not afraid of the dentist but…then again…my brother in law is my dentist 😃 We really lucked out when my sis married a dentist 👍 He does all the dental work for our family and he is so great with our kids 😃

I used to be scared when I was little though and our next door neighbor was my dentist and I played with his kids etc. but for some reason seeing him with the white coat, mask over his face, etc. I totally freaked out :o

When I was little my dentist was a Nazi war criminal. OK, not really, but watching *Marathon Man * for the first time brought back memories. He refused to use any sort of painkiller, and this was in the old days with the foot-operated (S-L-O-W) drill. Ouch.

Because of how horrible he was, I managed to avoid the dentist from when I was about 14 until I was 25. DO NOT MAKE THIS MISTAKE! I’ll pay the rest of my life for avoiding a dentist for so long.

Happily I found a wonderful dentist who understood my fear and who worked with me over a matter of months to get my mouth back in shape. He uses Novocaine, which works fine for me, but offers other painkillers/sedation as well. I love my dentist, visits are not painful, and I know my teeth are healthier – and I am healthier because abcesses can kill!

My son, age 14, has been going to our dentist since he was six months old, and he LOVES him. He actually asks, “Isn’t it time to go see Dr. Ken again?”

What if we imagine them naked? 😃

I’m totally scared of the dentist… thann, I think we had the same dentist!

I finally broke down yesterday and called to make an appt, I think it’s been around 5 years or so, and the office is closed in Tuesdays…I took it as an omen (ha ha) I haven’t called back…yet. 🙂

I would prefer to be put to sleep and just wake up with it all done.

Well they do have the sedation dentistry here in NH. And that is suppose to work for people like us. I emailed a DR that does it around here - and they were wonderful - emailed me right back and we corresponded … I haven’t made an appointment yet though, but I want to.

My oldest daughter is in Braces and my youngest came back fromt he Orthodontest today and she doesn’t need any work. So I am trying - with all my might - to get the courage to call and have some much needed work.

I am so scared … I am hyperventilating just writing this email

I had a bad dentist when I was young also. I had a sore tooth and my stepfather went with me to the dentist. THe Dr sent my stepdad out of the room. When his assistance tried to give the Dr the needle to numb my gum, the dentist shook his head. “No, we don’t need that.” He then proceeded to try and hypnotize me by having me imagine different color balloons.(I swear this is true) Of course when he tried to yank my tooth, I not only tried to climb out of the chair but I grabbed his hands in an attempt to stop the pain. He told my stepfather that he couldn’t remove the tooth. Later my mom blessed me out and told me how ashamed my stepfather and she was that such a big girl would have been a baby. I have no idea what that Dr. told them, but I was never asked what happened. The experience has given me a horrendous fear of dentist to this day.

I have absolutely no fear of dentists, why ? I have no clue.
Maybe your early memories of dentists were positive. I think that taking your child to a dentist that specializes in dealing with children is very important. My kids actually enjoy going to the dentist.

My kids have super dentists and orthodontists … my husband falls a sleep during visits …

Dentristry has improved amazingly over the past decades.

The family dentist I went to in my youth seemed to have graduated from the jack-hammer school of dentristy. It was always an ordeal.

But lately, it’s no big deal. The worst part for me is the teeth cleaning. If I need fillings, crowns, injections, whatever, it’s painless. Even without sedation, dentists can swab the gum with an anesthetic before giving an injection. I once had 4 fillings done in one sitting and dozed off during the process.

In my lifetime I have been afraid of most things at one time or another (due to Phobias) but one of the things I’ve never been afraid of is the dentist…:whacky:
