Feeling guilty about dating two girls

Are we on the same page with the definition of dating here? Just making sure. This because I’d like, with all said against the decidedly romantic dating, kissing etc., with multiple people, to keep the distinction that just talking, getting to know each other etc., as friends, is generally okay, and it will generally be interpreted as a date by a bystander by default.
Here’s my opinion, FWIW. Go out in groups with friends, mixing genders as it happens. When you start to go out on dates, do it with one person at a time. See how that goes before you start adding in confusion and complications. If you do decide to go out with more than one female friend at a time, make sure that 1) both of them know that you are and 2) no romantic feelings are developing on either side, with you, or the females.

But I don’t approve much of casual dating, so take it for what it’s worth, which is…

I see. Well, I guess we’ll disagree there. This is likely a cultural difference anyway. And I tend to prefer 1 on 1 meetings. This is okay where I live, including for married people who have friends or for priests etc. Nobody thinks ill of it or finds it awkward, although venue and type/length of acquaintance probably matters (as in, going to the theatre with a friend from childhood is not the same as hitting a fancy cafe with a newmet of the opposite sex). I think it’s an exaggeration to expect exclusivity in coffee/talk meetings, on the other hand involving a group is 1) a lot of hassle, 2) an obstacle to getting to know the individual person. BUT this doesn’t mean that shameless flirting is okay if you’re simply meeting up and talking. Undefined acquaintances probably shouldn’t continue for too long either. I guess we need to take the cultures or otherwise some defining circumstances of other people into consideration.

True.

The OP titled his thread, “Feeling GUILTY…” so I assumed that he had an inner problem with what he was doing, as well. He had not specifically told each girl that he was dating others, which I think he should do. All cards on the table, so to speak. Even before a date, I think one should say, “I am not discerning marriage and I am dating others.” And let the other person decide if that is OK with them.

My advice would be not to date the second girl as long as you are dating the first girl. I’m not saying you couldn’t talk to the second girl as a friend, but I think that considering you have kissed the first girl, there is most likely an expectation of exclusivity. (How would you feel if you found out that she was dating another guy, and you didn’t know about it?)

Also, my first thought on reading your subject line is that this sounds like something out of a 1980s sitcom. If you do date both girls, just be careful not to agree to make dinner for both of them on the same night in two different apartments in the same building. And if you have a friend named Larry who is a used car salesman, don’t let him rope you into a blind date with yet another girl at the same time. You just might end up getting food dumped all over you, like Jack Tripper in this Three’s Company episode. 😉

Which does not include finding out what kind of kissers they are! Just saying.

There should not be such a thing as a non-serious relationship. That kinda sounds like going through the motions for the excitment of it. I guess as far as a coffee and a dance goes that could probably be okay barring risk of emotional harm through misunderstanding, but when stuff like kissing etc. comes, then no, no, no. Because it becomes like the spin the bottle party game, which is poor style. Call me a prude if you will.

.
Dating is a process. To say there should be “no non serious relationships” is naive. Entangling your heart with all persons you are going on a date with could put you in a perpetual state of being hurt. Webster defines dating as “dating persons”, plural. The purpose of dating is to see who is the best possible mate. It is the level of commitment to the person that would change the exclusivity. Dating a couple of people on different nights is far from abnormal and I would suggest it over putting yourself as a man into the , “I must make it work with this one girl” approach .

Turning a kiss into “spin the bottle” is 'poor style" on your part. A kiss is a sign of affection unless your turning it into some devient act between an adult man and women. Not everybody meets the man or women they will marry on date number one. There are different people for all and it can become a quest unless you get blessed with a one time encounter.

Nobody is saying ** “I must make it work with this one girl” approach .**. I think most are saying FeelingGuilty or OP has already kissed a girl making the relationship more serious whether he intended or not. A kiss is not like drinking water. It is an intimate sign of affection. Now if OP kisses the second girl, this is definitely a problem as it indicates that the OP is seeking polyamorous relationships. If the OP doesn’t like the first girl anymore, he should just be honest and terminate it before it keeps getting out of control, he even met her parents!. If he going to kiss the second girl and meet her parents as well? 🤷

Your complicating the dating procees and making into some fundamentalist act. The OP is not saying he wants to date two girls forever and that fact that he has a conscience about it indicates he will find resolve over time. “No non serious relationships” , c’mon. Men and women date for a reason. It can be a rough process to find a mate for life. Yes, meet the parents, they want to know who there daughter is dating. Believe it or not the dating process actually weeds out the unfit for an individual and sometimes people get hurt. Hearts have been broken for centuries because one person just likes another more than the other. Life.

Ok let’s see

Your are saying you are ok with

A guy/girl going with multiple girls/guys and kissing/holding hands/and all that, meeting their parents, and later decide on choosing one?

Should they know of the other partners?

It doesn’t matter if some are hurt. This is Life?

While this is true it is wrong to lead someone on into thinking you care more for them than you do. Which is why it is extremely important that if your philosphy to dating includes non-exclusive dating you have to be upfront about it and inform everyone you date about this because there are many people who view dating differently and so it is likely that the person you are dating assumes it is an exclusive relationship and allows themselves to become more entangled than they would otherwise.

He kissed ONE girl and hasn’t even gone on a date with the other. You got his hands all over “multiple” women. Yes, thats life, feel it out. At some point in the date he may realize he doesn’t want to kiss the other one . Women don’t kiss every guy they date (nor do men). Meeting parents is an automatic sign of exclusivity? They may never have to know about each other and usually you know when dates aren’t working and you discontinue it, many times after ONE date.

What do you think dating is? Always one guy or girl a month? Sometimes worlds collide in the dating arena until YOU know what you want. Most people don’t want to hurt someone but life is full of not getting what you want and broken hearts. Marriage is serious. Get it right.

No,** OP clearly says he went on dates with the other girl**.
I’m feeling guilty about seeing two girls at the same time. One girl I’ve kissed and have met her family/friends. ** The other girl I have a date with in a few days, but I’ve known her for longer**. However, exclusivity has not been brought up by me or by either girl. As a Catholic, at which point is the line crossed in dating multiple people? I get the impression that both likely think this is exclusive, though I could be wrong. I apologize that I can’t really go into too much details, lest they read these forums. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
I am not saying the OP is dating multiple (two is multiple), but I am asking you to approve or disapprove so I can ascertain what it is what you believe with regards to dating. However, you decided to skip all questions, and continue to be unclear with your beliefs towards dating.

Why cannot you just come clean and say it?

“Yes I am ok with dating multiple girls, and kissing them/holding hand/meeting parents/ and all that, and later telling some of them I changed my mind, until I finally stay with the one girl or continue adding more girls I meet until I finally find the one”. Is this what you believe?

If you have a feeling both feel that the relationship are exclusive, then it is because you have been investing the kind of time that you would invest in a serious relationship - with both of them.

I don’t know if they’re Catholic, but a traditional Catholic who is dating someone and it’s gotten to the point where there is kissing going on, then they are likely going to assume you are serious about them even if they are not bringing it up. They may be waiting for you to make the first move so as not to be pushy, but in their mind, they might already see you as the boyfriend.

Secondly, if the one you haven’t kissed thinks you’re exclusive, there must be a reason for it. Are you spending a lot of time on the phone or texting? Are you exchanging endearments?

I think you’re conscience/ the Holy Spirit is speaking to you and you should listen.

Are you reading what I’m writing or even the OPs post? Your wrong, he kissed ONE girl and has a date in a few days with the other. You can’t determine my views on dating based on all that I wrote? DATE BOTH I said in my first post. Only through mutal exprssion can both know exclusivity. You can’t tip toe through life in fear of upsetting people at all times or people pleasing.

Again, you before said he didn’t date the other one, now you say he did date it a few days.

Again, you can’t simply say that Yes this is what I believe? I don’t know if what I am asking too difficult ?

I am not tip toeing. I am simply asking you some questions. You refused to answer them, and then tell me I am wrong? I am asking you some questions, that’s it.

Are you afraid to write Yes this is what I believe? or No, this is not, but I believe …?

Ask God why you feel guilty and seek the advice of a spiritual advisor, maybe your parish priest. Guilt can be a gift from the Holy Spirit calling you to make a hard decision. Guilt can also be a sign of depression or struggling with loneliness.

Search your heart, are you guided by it or are you objective? I’ve been through abuse so what I’m referring to is believing a relationship is exclusive when it is anything but. There
is no such thing as recreational intimacy, we aren’t made for it. You can’t be intimate with two women at once because intimacy involves wanting what is best for one woman where being distracted from her is not what’s best for her.

As far as can you kiss a woman on a date, I think this is expected and not necessarily sexual. Be careful though, we are wired to commit to someone where kissing is an early step in that. God wants souls for heaven, respect for life, couples who are truly one. God wants us to model him in our loving. God also wants you to take on what you can handle and nothing more. This is especially important when you are considering family life. Christ is the only friend you can lean on for what is lacking in yourself. Christ is the only one who can fulfill you completely. Marriage and religious life are avenues to understand love and prepare for God’s absolute love of us.

If you are suffering from depression or struggling with loneliness, you aren’t bringing independence and stability to a romantic relationship. Get help with that and just be friends with these women until you are stronger. As far as breaking hearts goes, avoiding intimacy that is reserved for marriage will lessen the blow. If you feel you have been intimate without making the appropriate commitment, take a step back and forgive yourself. Get objective if you aren’t and pray. If you need to discuss getting too intimate with one or both of these women, you need spiritual advising first. A priest can tell you if your suspicions are correct or not and advise you as well as connect you with grace.

Sorry about the lengthy reply. Seek the face of God in your dating life always. Remember, loving a woman teaches you how to love God later. Love God in her and love yourself. Get spiritual advising and approach romance from a position of strength. She should do so as well. Date women who are strong, women who can discern God’s will for them in their dating lives.

Dating is a process. To say there should be “no non serious relationships” is naive.
No, it’s not. Not every relationship has a high degree of commitment. But this is not the same as being diligent to act morally and not hurt or disrespect the other person.
Entangling your heart with all persons you are going on a date with could put you in a perpetual state of being hurt.
That is one thing but the use of sexual faculties, even in the broad sense, for mere recreational fun with no strings attached is not something particularly appealing to me on the moral side.
Webster defines dating as “dating persons”, plural.
Cambridge defines to date (verb) as “* mainly US to regularly spend time with someone you have a romantic relationship with.”
The purpose of dating is to see who is the best possible mate.
In a way yes but a human being has dignity above that of animals and cannot allow himself to replicate animal mating selection processes without thought to that dignity.
It is the level of commitment to the person that would change the exclusivity.
As long as we agree that kissing crosses the line, then there’s still basically no disagreement between us other than semantics.
Dating a couple of people on different nights is far from abnormal and I would suggest it over putting yourself as a man into the , “I must make it work with this one girl” approach .
Which does not entitle consumption anyway.
Turning a kiss into “spin the bottle” is 'poor style" on your part. A kiss is a sign of affection unless your turning it into some devient act between an adult man and women.
A kiss between a man and woman (not necessarily adult) is not a deviant act. It is a sign of love, perhaps of a natural desire to marry someone (establish a future with, a family, children). This is part of what makes kissing so enjoyable to men and women. It engages the sensual faculty, well, even the sexual faculty in a broad sense.

By contrast, the friendly kissing on the cheek is different. This because friendship is not a non-exclusive affection, whereas the type of affection that inclines people to enter intro matrimony is an exclusive one. Sorry for some 19th century English here.

Can’t claim friendly affection when the very reason and immediate cause of the action is that man and woman are not just friends to each other. (For the record, I have no problem with people who use that type of kiss as a genuine friends greeting. In which case it shouldn’t feel wrong between two big hairy men or two siblings of opposite sexes.)
Not everybody meets the man or women they will marry on date number one.
Of course not. But honest attempts, more or less subconscious, unmeditated, intuitive, are different from just running a dating harem by design. Or, to avoid the fallacy of an emotional argument, from engaging in multiple relationships at the same time, which by definition cannot all last, not even if one perfectly exercised all care, diligence and reason and sincerely willed for that result to happen.

If you start a relationship with a girl, you know it may or may not work. If you start relationships with three girls, you know from start that two or three of them (you just don’t know which but this is a poor excuse) are not even possible to last, nor intended to. Two letdowns, two futile trial relationships, are intended as such from start. Which is wrong.

And you seem to have missed my point that getting to know people and finding out about them does not necessarily need to include (and justify) trying them out actually at a rate of two, three, four of them a go. I believe it is wrong to harbour in oneself simultaneous desire for a monogamous union with several different people at the same time, which is basically what that is doing.*

Again, your first sentence is not accurate. Show where I said one thing then another. __________________
Whats the specific question?

Ok, because you asked me.
He kissed ONE girl and hasn’t even gone on a date with the other.
he kissed ONE girl and has a date in a few days with the other.
I’m feeling guilty about seeing two girls at the same time. One girl I’ve kissed and have met her family/friends. The other girl I have a date with in a few days, but I’ve known her for longer.
My questions are

Your are saying you are ok with

A guy/girl going with multiple girls/guys and kissing/holding hands/and all that, meeting their parents, and later decide on choosing one?

Should they know of the other partners?

It doesn’t matter if some are hurt. This is Life?

Wow. How are you reading that? He kissed one girl and hasn’t gone on a date with the other. The girl he hasn’t gone on the date with IS the “other” that he will date in a few days. Same result! No difference in the sentences.
Yes you can go on dates with different people at different times. You can meet their parents. Meeting parents is not some engagment status.Sometimes you go there to pick someone up or meet to be friendly. You could also have had gone out with a different girl the night before and either she or you didn’t want to kiss. If you kiss, you kiss. Your not married. You haven’t told another girl your in love with her or she is your girlfriend. You are testing matchability. I do not advise going further then some kissing for obvious possible sexual advancment reasons.

I have told a girl on a date, “I’m dating”, If I dated the night before I may say, “the girl I went out the night before lived in so and so place”. If a girl is showing strong interest she may stress the importance of being exclusive. If you agree, you don’t go on other dates. In some cases you may not need to say you went out with someone else. Theres no boyfriend, girlfriend situation. Dating is about seeking, not settling. When you find what you want, you exclusivly date. If someone gets hurt because they liked you but you had interest in someone else, what can you do? Go and pacify them even though you don’t like them romantically? People unfortunately get hurt seeking love or companionship. If you do it intentionally you have issues. It matters if someone is hurt but we are not living in some dytopian world.
