Female circumcision a problem in Britain

LONDON - Female genital mutilation, commonly associated with parts of Africa and the Middle East, is becoming a growing problem in Britain despite efforts to stamp it out. London’s Metropolitan Police, Britain’s largest police force, hopes a campaign beginning on Wednesday will highlight that the practice is a crime here.

To make their point, police are offering a $40,000 reward for information leading to Britain’s first prosecution for female genital mutilation, Detective Chief Superintendent Alastair Jeffrey said.
In Britain, the problem mostly involves first-generation immigrants from Africa and the Middle East.

A horrible practice
It makes you wonder how in the world it started.
Who was the first one to say “Hey! Why don’t I take a knife to my private parts and then let’s do it to our daughters too.”

It is sometimes difficult to get immigrants to shed their cultural norms.
(I remember my father telling me the story that 30 some odd years ago a man with a stab wound stumbled into his firehouse. Evidently he was the victim of an “honor killing” attempt in a nearby ethnic nieghborhood. As the firemen were trying to help the stabbee, the stabber comes along to collect the victim’s ear as a trophy.

Except that female circumcision is almost exclusively either done or arranged by women. It is the women in the family who are adamant about having girl babies circumcised.

Tattooing, piercing, and that new craze “carving” give me the willies
The notion of FGM just stupefies me.

Call me culturally bigoted, ethnocentric, and unenlightened but I just don’t understand it.

And I’m proud of that

You wouldn’t do it – it would be her female relatives, although in more “civilized” countries they would hire a physician to do the actual cutting.
