I heard a similar story on this on [of all places] NPR.

Why does man-I’m talking in terms of the ‘human race’ in general here-always mess things up when it comes to ‘increasing and multiplying’ on earth?

My observations lead me to believe that the female human is the only female regarded as useless. When a heifer is born, the farmer celebrates. In fact, some in India actually worship her. One Indian guy told me how wonderful cows were because they give milk. Well, I responded with, “well so does your wife, shouldn’t you worship her too then?” He thought I was was weird. However, when goat doe is born, the farmer celebrates. Some even drown the bucks at birth because they’re so useless. In fact, there’s a doe out in my yard standing on my car as I write, and I wish I could go out there and drown her myself, however, I know how valuable she is, so instead of drowning her, I’ll have to out there with grain and reward her back into her pen. When a ewe is born, the farmer celebrates, and thinks, “ahh, pecorino romano cheese”. When a ram is born, we haul them off to the sale barn and don’t even care how much we get for them because they’re useless anyways.

Within a decade females will be the most valuable asset too, like any scarcity.

The present practice makes problems for the young males, they find no wives. The moral laws always intend to prevent disasters.

I’m not sure why NPR’s coverage of the story would surprise you. Its a topic they’ve covered multiple times during the past decade. 🤷

The problem has been long in development. I first heard about it around 1990, and although the Indian government has taken steps to curb the practice, it is still all too common. Determined parents seem to find sympathetic/unscrupulous doctors.

The dowry system, the differential career opportunities for men and women, and the relatively low status of women in India all seem to play a part. The NCR article also mentions Hindu funeral rites needing to be performed by a son as also important. The article is a good read, with much information. Worth noting is that the world-wide ratio of girls to boys is 986/1000.

China, of course, is also facing a similar problem. In large part, this has been due to their one-child policy.
 
Infanticide earlier, why kill a female baby when you can kill it months earlier as a fetus and then you aren’t a murderer. This culture of death depresses me.

It’s still murder whether its’s a fetus or baby!
