Yes, this is where it gets muddy. We Carmelites (as well as all the mendicants) are monastics but are friars, not monks.Franciscans and Carmelites are Friars, not monks; they have active charisms whereas monks are contemplatives. But you are right the Catholic Church has many, many monks!Benedictines, Brigittines, Cistercians, Carthusians, Trappists, so on and so forth.
