Nessie, your fiancee has a good fix on what it means to be (financially) responsible and plan ahead, and that’s something to build on. Now, you have to explain to him that doing things as God intended them is also about responsibility and planning ahead to avoid disasters down the road. You know that heavy smokers sometimes get sick and die of lung cancer, because they kept poisoning themselves with carcinogenic compounds over a period of several years. Likewise, poisoning your marriage with contraception is a mortal sin that kills the soul and could kill your marriage over time. Just because a lot of people do it, without any visible harm, it wouldn’t make it any less foolish for you guys to jump on the bandwagon. A lot of people keep smoking and are doing just fine, until they are diagnosed with cancer and then they are suddenly no longer fine. Giving a financial example, a lot of people took toxic mortgages (ARMs and even negative amortization mortgages) during the real estate boom, and they were doing just fine - until the real estate market collapsed, and then these people suddenly found themselves in great trouble and many of them went bankrupt.

It takes responsibility and planning ahead to avoid disasters not only with our finances and physical health, but also with our spiritual health and marriage. Do the right thing from day one, so that God may bless you both with a happy marriage. Get the point across to your fiancee. Not being able to be open for God’s gift of children just yet is a legitimate reason to wait with the wedding until you get on a more stable financial footing and until you are ready to welcome the children with whom God may bless your marriage.

In my opinion, whether you will end up with 2 children, 6 children, or none at all, you cannot foresee at this point. It is more important to agree first on the correct way of doing things, and that means every marital act should be open to children, but you commit no sin by refraining from the marital act as a means of family planning. Maybe 5 years into the marriage you will still not conceive; maybe after 3 kids your husband will loose his apprehension and will want 3 more. Some of these things are in God’s hands (including his ability to change people’s hearts and when exactly wants He to bless you with children) and he chose not to reveal them to you. You should simply be faithful and obedient to Him now, day by day, and let the events unfold. God is in control, and everything will be fine in the end.

Joseph’s post is a beautiful and true one.
Bottom line is, we have to relax and trust God. Everything works together for good for those who love Him.
Remember, life is what happens while we’re making other plans.
You have to be excited about what challenges you will meet: could be no children, could be 5 or 6, could be a handicapped child, adoptive children, you just don’t know. God has a plan and it will be great. . . and probably unpredictable.

Nessie -

Hi - I’m not sure if you posted how old you are - but if you are young (less than 30) PLEASE KEEP LOOKING.

Especially if you haven’t had a family to belong to growing up.

The PAIN of not having a family where you belong is really horrible.

I gave my husband the “benefit of the doubt” going into the wedding. We have been married about 6 months. All I see is further evidence from him about how he cannot handle NORMAL human interactions (read: meals together or visits with family). We have 150K EACH in the bank, and yet he could only spend 3K on the wedding reception AND the honeymoon (that’s 1.5 K each). There is NO WAY he can handle a crying baby at 2 am.

If you do have time - delay the marriage until he SINCERELY and HONESTLY tells you his heart (don’t let him bamboozle you)…and LOOKS YOU IN THE EYE and says he wants children BEFORE your chances of having a healthy child are over. Otherwise, see other people. TRUST ME ON THIS.

When I first met my fiance, he did not agree on the Church’s teaching about contraception. He is now open to NFP. I.
This was just like my fiance. He wasn’t a practicing Catholic when we met, but we have been attending church together and he has being going to RCIA (confirmation and first holy communion will be on easter vigil!) After lots of prayer and talking, I was able to have him see my side on why i only wanted to practice NFP. Now he fully agrees to it… (before he thought birth control and condoms were the way to go).
However, he also doesn’t want to have alot of kids. When we first met, he said “maybe one” (he was an only child, im the eldest of five)… i have always said that i wanted a big family, but the number God would decide. Lately he has been saying that a big family would be nice… but doesn’t want a “crazy ammount.” So i said “alright… twelve kids it is.” He was shocked because to him, five kids is a “crazy ammount.” Haha, what a silly. He will come around though. He is still finding his trust in God. Prayer does work =]

So really, i don’t have any advice. Just letting you know that I’m sorta in the same boat. Prayers to you =]

A couple of comments.

Think its unwise to always assume that the other person will change their views ie proving your idea is correct. My mother made that assumption and it caused her no end of grief as she thought that as Dad loved her he would totally change his personality and his ways.

And this way be well off beam, keep in mind that your fiance has had certain experiences as an only child. A smaller, probably quieter house - your jumping from 5 children to 12 could be downright scary to him. As an only, I cannot imagine that many children let alone trying to run such a household.

Something else I find is that because I was not brought up with teasing etc at home I don’t know at times when people are teasing and when they are not. Some of my friends recognise this and say “I was only teasing” when I think they are being serious and getting upset or scared at what they are suggesting.

I never asked him to change his ways. Never once did I say “You do this or else!” With the children, my point is to let God have a hand in deciding. He is still learning to put his faith fully in God, and not in man made things, so as he matures in his faith, he will mature in his trust in God. I would never want him to change his personality and ways. I fell in love with him three years ago, and wouldn’t change a thing.

I know what you mean about teasing… some of my friends are like that too! But with Josh and I, we tease alot and he knows when I’m teasing or not. =]

That’s good, you’ll be able to grow together. Enjoy the journey.

Then teasing can be fun!
