BEIJING – Watermelons have been bursting by the score in eastern China after farmers gave them overdoses of growth chemicals during wet weather, creating what state media called fields of “land mines.”
Code:
About 20 farmers around Danyang city in Jiangsu province were affected, losing up to 115 acres (45 hectares) of melon, China Central Television said in an investigative report.

Prices over the past year prompted many farmers to jump into the watermelon market. All of those with exploding melons apparently were first-time users of the growth accelerator **forchlorfenuron**, though it has been widely available for some time, CCTV said.

No wonder California fruits and vegetable taste so good. I’m staying away from food that have propylene glycol as one of its ingredients. Why would anyone want to consume antifreeze on purpose?

Whoa! That’s gotta look weird! Yes, maybe, just maybe, anti freeze isn’t good for you to consume.

Propylene Glycol is not antifreeze. Antifreeze is ethylene glycol. Propylene glycol is completely innocuous and does less damage when taken in than Ethanol

From an MSDS of sorts on propylene glycol
The toxicity of propylene glycol is mainly due to the
parent compound and not to its metabolites. Propylene glycol
has an irritatant effect on direct contact with eyes, mucous
membranes and possibly after prolonged contact with skin.
Code:
Propylene glycol causes CNS depression similar to that caused
by ethanol but it is only one-third as potent. Cardiotoxic
effects include arrhythmias and cardiac arrest. Renal and
hepatic damage has been reported in animals (Seidenfeld &
Hanzlik, 1932), but there are no clinical data confirming
         this effect.

The metabolites are relatively non-toxic: lactic acidosis
         and serum hyperosmolality may occur.
All of the effects of Propylene glycol are similar to many “natural” compounds like ethanol (beer, liquor, etc.) and most are actually less.

I simply try to avoid anything that has been added to my food. If God did not put it there than I dont want it (for the most part).

But dont stress over propylene glycol, heck you brush your teeth with it every day if you use anything but “organic” toothpaste.

And, just as an additional FYI, anything you eat that says PEG is PolyEthyleneGlycol, which is not metabolized in the same fashion a Ethylene Glycol and is non-toxic unless you consume approximately half your body weight per day every day for an extended period.

PEG is typically used in foodstuffs to give a certain consistency. Low molecular weight PEG has a relatively low viscosity while High molecular weight PEG has a high viscosity. Many syrups used to contain this and it is currently used medicinally as a… how to put this… bowel cleanser… prior to some medical operations.
