I sometimes can’t help but think that we are so far gone, that we are truly lost and there is no hope. .
Perhaps that is true of you or others, but it is not true of many good people out there who live good, moral and decent lives.

By “we” I am referring to the culture as a whole.

Yes, there are still moral individuals, bucking against the trends of society.

But the “normal” now is to be sexually active, and society at large now considers it shameful to have had less than seven sexual partners by the time you are of dating age, even to the point of a conservative, family oriented newspaper advocating that people lie if they have never had sex before, and say that they have had at least seven partners, in order to be considered “normal.” Normal enough to get a date.

…society at large now considers it shameful to have had less than seven sexual partners by the time you are of dating age, …
Perhaps this is true of you and your circle of acquaintances but I know many good, moral and decent people and it is not true of them.

You persist in misunderstanding me. I am not talking about something my friend told me. (My friends are good Catholics, for the most part.)

I’m talking about the advice being given in the newspaper, to kids who have become old enough to date. Kids who may not have the benefit of two parents at home to teach them right from wrong, and who get their idea of “normal” from the newspaper.

Things like that don’t get into the newspaper without being considered “normal” by everyone who works there, and by the majority of readers.

What newspaper article ever said that it is shameful to have had less than seven sexual partners by the time you are of dating age?

I was reading an article in the paper yesterday that was telling people to say that they have had seven or more sexual partners (even if they have never had sex before) in order to be able to get a date in today’s “dating scene.”

That has to be the saddest (and also possibly the stupidest) thing I’ve ever read. But we have definitely lost our moral footing, already.
My son just went through the Right S.T.A.R.T. program at school. A quote from one of the brochures he brought home:

“When you have sex with someone, you are having sex with everyone they have had sex with for the last ten years, and everyone they and their partners have had sex with for the last ten years.” - C. Everett Koop, M.D., Former U.S. Surgeon General

According to the brochure, if someone has had 7 sexual partners, that someone has been exposed to 127 people (if every person involved has the same number of partners as that someone).

I really worry for the future. This country is really in very sad shape. Immorality is rampant.

It is not true of me. I try to live a moral and decent life according to the teachings of the Church. I am talking about the country in general. This is my country. When I discuss America, as an American, I use the pronouns “we” and “us.” I fear for all of us in this nation because when I think we have hit rock bottom, it seems we just keep sliding further into the pit of depravity.

Greetings TheTrueCentrist,

And pray tell me what use would they need that knowledge at age 10?

God Bless.

Some of them need it by 11 or 12. I don’t see harm in knowledge. Failure to inform kids of potential danger is wrong. If your kid remains chaste, then it won’t really matter if he or she understands what a condom is used for, or how to use it.

Good parents can teach their children NOT to act on their hormones. If boys or girls are taught its okay to have sex, then they’ll ending up thinking its okay to do other immoral things.

Telling them condoms protect you from disease…its giving them false security.

And also treats pregnancy as a disease as well.

No, we don’t want 12 year old pregnant girls…but we don’t want parents saying “this is a condom. If you get the urge to have sex, make sure to wear it!”

We want parents teaching their children that its okay*** NOT TO FOLLOW the crowd…******they don’t need to act on peer pressure.

Kids are not adults. They make mistakes. Let them live a healthy life. Don’t burden them with a pregnancy or lifelong disease to satisfy your own moral truculence. It is a false victory if you live in the real world.

The knowledge itself may not be harmful for **some **11 or 12 year olds. However, the presentation of this knowledge in the context of classroom teaching is an assault on a child’s psychological latency. The same knowledge delivered by loving parents or even a health professional is not as psychologically damaging as for the child to hear it from a teacher while sitting with his peers. Developmentally inappropriate information, especially during the latency period can keep a child from ever developing a healthy attitude about sex or about man-woman relationships.

We are raising a generation whose innocence has been assaulted at a very young age. Some of that assault is hard to avoid but that doesn’t mean we join up with the other side. We should not allow the schools to be complicit in that assault.

I don’t have enough expertise on child psychology to know. Behaviorally and physically, puberty is arriving earlier. Nobody is sure why. I was in 6th grade when we had sex education. That would have been the age of 10. The timing was about right. I was the first one in my peer group to start puberty, even though most of them were a year older than I.

Typically, 6th grade is 11 years of age.

The one I was reading yesterday that I was telling you about in the earlier post. 🤷

I don’t see anything wrong with explaining the mechanics of sex, birth control, the dangers of STD’s etc to kids BEFORE they have sex. That is not a moral education, it is biology. Along with that should be the simple facts that the only way to be certain not to catch in STD is not to have sex. The only way to be certain not to have a pregnancy is not to have sex. It should also be pointed out that there are moral issues to consider.

I believe that the kid who is well informed is LESS likely to engage in risky behavior, than the kid who has been left in the dark and is relying on what he or she imagines to be true, or picks up from unreliable sources.

As to what those issues are… that is up to the parents or guardians of the child.
