Fighting?

The other day, someone tried to steal my phone. I convinced him out of it, but after a ton of talking and after the teacher came in.

Any way, this got me thinking, what is a reason for fighting? I have heard that only to fight when my life, or someone else is in danger, but that seems very extreme to me. Does the church have a stand on this?

From the Catechism:
2264 Love toward oneself remains a fundamental principle of morality. Therefore it is legitimate to insist on respect for one’s own right to life. Someone who defends his life is not guilty of murder even if he is forced to deal his aggressor a lethal blow.

2265 Legitimate defense can be not only a right but a grave duty for one who is responsible for the lives of others. The defense of the common good requires that an unjust aggressor be rendered unable to cause harm. For this reason, those who legitimately hold authority also have the right to use arms to repel aggressors against the civil community entrusted to their responsibility.

2306 Those who renounce violence and bloodshed and, in order to safeguard human rights, make use of those means of defense available to the weakest, bear witness to evangelical charity, provided they do so without harming the rights and obligations of other men and societies. They bear legitimate witness to the gravity of the physical and moral risks of recourse to violence, with all its destruction and death.
Seems like you’ve got it right. Defending life is permissible, and a good. Renouncing violence is also a good.
 
don’t forget that what bad you do to others you do to Jesus, but what good you do to others Jesus does through you,
“Learn of Me, because I am meek and humble of heart” when we are meek and humble, that is Jesus in us, and when we let Jesus work through us, it can only produce good effects, for one because people are just drawn to those things, and two because it is very pleasing to God.

to suffer for Jesus is a great proof of our love for Him, but to cause pain for others, even if they started it, is a proof of our lack of love for Him,
and it doesn’t matter if someone deserves it or not, we all deserve hell after all, so who are we do decide such things for our neighbor? Jesus forgave them as they were crucifying Him, and we hold grudges at the smallest insult…

whether it’s physical fighting or verbal fighting, neither will produce good fruit, but when your life or someone elses life is in danger, then it is permissible because your life is more important…but no phone, or money, or anything else, is worth sinning over, even venally…

i know you aren’t saying that you want to fight or that it should be ok, but when you said “but that seems very extreme to me” it just made me think that maybe you don’t understand to what degree it is bad…but if i’m wrong then ok, sorry for that, maybe i’m completely misunderstanding the question, but if not, then i hope this helps, tc.
