Films 'Risen' and 'The Young Messiah'

Is that what happens in the film? I haven’t seen any trailers yet since I usually like to watch films cold, so I wouldn’t know.

There’s not much in Scripture or Tradition about Jesus’ childhood at all. I don’t see why a movie can’t explore that time, and embellish a little, as long as it doesn’t contradict what we do know.

Like I said though, I’m holding off judgment until I see it. Greydanus is usually pretty reliable when it comes to these types of movies, and the fact that he gives it such glowing praise makes me interested to watch it. But we’ll see.
 
I think “Risen” would be good and if we want people to make religious films we need to support them by going to them. Either go to them or some other Hollywood film loaded with the wrong messages.

We seem to think any and all religious films must be the best thing that ever came out or they aren’t any good.

I’m not sure about “The Young Messiah” I know many Protestant groups won’t like it since it features Mary and the idea of her telling Jesus who He was will really upset them. They only want to think of Mary a little at Christmas time.

Jesus surely knew who he was when they found him teaching in the temple at 12 years old. Plus, Anne Rice had Jesus killing a playmate and then bringing him back to life. The article said they left that part out, thank God. Will need to see what they left in before I see it.

Not true.

I have to wonder why I pretty frequently find myself reading threads here which have nothing specifically to do with Protestants but which contain gratuitous swipes at Protestants.🤷

Anyway, thank you to all who gave their thoughts on the movies themselves.

Oh you mean like it was in the Gospel of Thomas. In it Jesus struck people blind, killed them out right, or made clay doves come to life.
 
I really really really liked Risen. It was historically accurate as far as the Romans were concerned. It dealt with the Theology in a very respectful way. A couple of the Apostles were memorable. Peter, as I always pictured him, had a larger than life personality and was maybe my favorite character even though it was small role.

I guess your Church talks about Mary but I know the Protestants I have debated online don’t much care for Mary and to say we pray to her they think is sacrilegious.

How is it in any way “historically accurate”?

Does anyone know anything about them? The later is based on a book by Ann Rice and stars Sean Bean and the former has Joseph Fiennes. They both play roman soldiers, one looking for the ‘body’ of Jesus and the other for the child Jesus.

I saw Risen, I thought it was a great continuation to Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ. Very well made. 👍

Well, did the child Jesus have to learn about God like the rest of us? It’s a valid question to ask. Since the Church teaches he was like us in all things but sin, I don’t see why not. In fact, I always figured Mary and Joseph taught Jesus about God when he was a child. Remember, the bible says Jesus was asking the rabbis questions when they found him in the temple. And there’s nothing in the text to indicate they were anything but honest questions.

So what Joseph says here doesn’t seem that problematic to me from a theological standpoint at least. It sounds like something a righteous man entrusted with raising the Son of God would ask.
 
I saw Risen today and I really liked it. I thought Joseph Fiennes gave a very moving performance as the tribune soldier. an interesting perspective. very inspirational. a good movie for Lent.
 
Saw premiere of RISEN. Yes, think it worth seeing. However, having a tough time wrapping my head around a fantasized year in the life of Christ the Child in Egypt…complete with a bullying segment (Political Correctness?). It’s one thing to pontificate a Centurion’s journey to faith. It’s yet another to create in a viewer’s mind (particularly vulnerable youth or those not steeped in Faith) images not backed by Holy Scriptures or Holy Tradition or Magisterial Teaching about Our Lord. Not interested…
 
Is this the same Ann Rice who wrote a number of books about vampires starting in the early 70s?
I read all the vampire books and eventually got bored with them. I was unaware about the Christian nature of her later writings. I read her first novel "INTERVIEW WITH VAMPIRE’’ when I was only 20 years old. Now I am 60.

she returned briefly to the Catholic church and then left again 8-10 years later. she calls herself a secular humanist now and Christ is the center of her life.
