The same as I did with Facebook, I had been seriously rethinking how much should I keep using Google products. So far, I have been using it piratically on everything, professionally (developing for Android), to store all my files on Google Drive and of course, and like everyone as the main search engine.

However, some events along the time, forced me to rethink if I should put all my eggs on Google’s basket. Android platform has been showing to be very fragmented and some other technical issues not worthy fighting for any-more. Google Drive stopped syncing earlier this year, leaving me in hot water on an important presentation day. Let us admit, Google Glass has some creepiness on it (useful in some areas like medicine, but not in general public). Finally, the things that made me turn off the television, namely excessive ads and bad content, it is all taking over Youtube now.

This week made my decision taking much easier. Firstly, monopoly tactics on the search engine can’t be ignored anymore (EU is right!). The last addition is a Youtube huge link, when you search for a music, leaving out of the scene growing projects, like Spotify (where I listen to music now).

**The final straw is in today’s doodle. I can’t really search focused, when I have a LGBT flag hanging on my browser. And Google got it all wrong, Olympic games is not about politics nor agendas. It is about sports. It is sad that (American) main-stream media is clearly creating distractions, either because of terrorism threats (which are not novelties from Sochi) and now LGBT agendas. ** Sighs

I had enough. I am not calling no-one to follow me. Each one should follow his/her own conscience. As for me, I am using Bing now at least until the stupid doodle is out, and gradually I am replacing Google products with other even better around. Interesting how Google quickly forgot their motto (“Don’t be evil”).

But yeah, I’m gonna be using Bing as well. I think it works just as good. 🙂

They are just a bunch of liberal goons. Really, you should feel sorry for them. I use them because they are good at what they do, I can’t help it if they are insane.

I haven’t watched T.V. for over two years but I do watch some things on U-tube. It has a lot of good content, but I refuse to sign up.

I like the Bing backdrops a LOT more than those Google doodles. They are more informative.

Interesting pictures and those hotspots (or whatever they are called) are great for finding out more about the topic.

yesterdays image was wildebeests, with info about the Serengeti, todays is the Sochi skating rink.

As for searches, I don’t see any big difference, with the possible exception that I know Google charges for top spots, I don’t know if Bing does the same.

And to be perfectly honest (and I never thought I would say this), I trust Microsoft with my search history more than I do Google.

yes its irritating to open it up and see that. Its no different than Google having a doodle of Chavez last year on Easter Sunday!

Thanks for the suggestion on the search engine!

Duckduckgo, and startpage.com are good search engines that have good privacy policies.
Google, aside from their absurd idolization of diversity, is also an extremely snoopy and intrusive company. Part of their business plan is the harvesting, saving, and selling and/or exploiting of the computer user’s browsing habits. I don’t think Bing is much better. That’s a Microsoft product. When have they ever really cared about people other than as consumers?
I’ll just touch briefly on Facebook. People think they have privacy through their settings, and true enough they can keep the average stranger out of their business, but part of the terms of service requires that one’s facebook account be open in its entirety to facebook and its myriad list of “partners” at all times including when you are offline. If for example you comment on news articles through your facebook account, you have given permission for the news to snoop into your account. The alarming thing to me is that most people I tell about this do not care.

You are right. So far, I am more than happy with Bing. No ads in top results, and the algorithm works perfectly. I am glad now Google forced me to see what exists out there.

Those are interesting alternatives as well. I think the problem with Google is that I feel cheated. As a Computer Science student, when I entered in college about 10 years ago, Google were the good guys (“don’t be evil”). They were inspirations for many of us and our projects. Now they are showing a quite opposite facet.

I never had problem with Microsoft, because since the beginning they were pretty clear they are just for the business. They products are quite easy to identify, unlike Google which is profiting on people’s data.

I did let myself go by Google ecosystem and I had virtually all my life on their servers. I liked this idea of doing just a single sign in and access everything. If someone happened to access my credentials, they would have really everything I own. I had colleagues last year warning me about this, but I didn’t listen. This event was really good to open my eyes.

I’ve used Bing a lot in the past but I don’t care for it (I’ve been known to remove Bing from any computer I can, even at work, as I dislike it that much.) I’ve used more than one search engine for a specific search because the results are so different, which can be useful, and in the end I thought Google was best. I had also deliberately avoided Google products but caved and created an account to use one app I really wanted. I guess I’m a Google drone and I hate that, but as far as search engines it is the best.

Smart Search and Ixquick use Google and are private so I tend to use them but something in the algorithm must change because I get different search results than if I use Google straight

Wait. Did I miss something? Are you talking about this doodle?

Where do you see anything about LGBT in that?
It’s a rainbow flag with the following written bellow.

“The practice of sport is a human right,” reads the quote from the Olympic Charter underneath a rainbow-colored sports doodle. “Every individual must have the possibility of practicing sport, without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.” Olympic Charter

It isn’t difficult to see why many people interpret it as a dig at Russia’s anti-gay laws.

I didn’t associate this with anything regarding gays but I did notice that the colors weren’t from the Olympic rings so I should have continued processing why that was significant.

That’s not much to go on. May I suggest that it is in your imagination?

The rainbow (or spectrum) is a beautiful, simple, and natural color sequence. It seems to me that a great many of you have allowed it to be hijacked. Why don’t you stand up and fight against the hijackers? Take back the rainbow. Why must you accept it and reinforce it as a LGBT symbol?

Do you fly into a rage when you see God’s rainbow in sky? Shall we boycott rain showers now? Do you “correct” your elementary schoolchild if he draws a rainbow on his artwork? You may choose to live in fear of rainbows, but I don’t.

Neither do I. 🙂 But when it’s a deliberate attempt to promote LGBT rights, the easiest way to “fight back” is to not use the product, and in this case, the Google search engine. 🙂

It is obvious any data we as humans receive, can’t really have any meaning for us, unless you put it into context. For example, 26 is just a number. But if you put 26 years old, you know this is about age, this is information.

In the same way, a rainbow, in its strict definition is just a multicoloured arc appearing on a meteorological phenomena.

However, when you have a rainbow in a newspaper, and it is 1994 in South Africa, you are clearly symbolizing the fall of apartheid.

When we are in 2014, and the Olympic games of Sochi are happening, anyone aware of the context (like the numerous news sites reporting this issue) knows that the rainbow is the LGBT flag, and with it, the causes they are fighting for, including gay marriage.

Context. Yet, if in your personal and geo-political context, even after this information, a rainbow is just a rainbow today, good for you, as I said, each one has his conscience, and I can’t ‘hijack’ your mind as you said.
