Final Straw on Google (Rant)

It is obvious any data we as humans receive, can’t really have any meaning for us, unless you put it into context. For example, 26 is just a number. But if you put 26 years old, you know this is about age, this is information.

In the same way, a rainbow, in its strict definition is just a multicoloured arc appearing on a meteorological phenomena.

However, when you have a rainbow in a newspaper, and it is 1994 in South Africa, you are clearly symbolizing the fall of apartheid.

When we are in 2014, and the Olympic games of Sochi are happening, anyone aware of the context (like the numerous news sites reporting this issue) knows that the rainbow is the LGBT flag, and with it, the causes they are fighting for, including gay marriage.

Context. Yet, if in your personal and geo-political context, even after this information, a rainbow is just a rainbow today, good for you, as I said, each one has his conscience, and I can’t ‘hijack’ your mind as you said.
Good points.

I realize there’s an automatic knee-jerk reaction against anything inclusive of homosexuals here, but the context that’s important here is the words of the Olympic charter printed below.

Like it or not, we do have gay Olympians. They represent their nations in their respective sports with pride. The doodle (and accompanying words) sends the message that regardless of the host nation’s attitude, Google supports ALL of our athletes as they should. If the Olympics is to be all about sports and not agendas, then there should be no reason to do otherwise.

Why is it that whenever a non-christian complains about something being offensive, it is quickly resolved and/or removed, but when a christian complains about something being offensive, they are just blown off or even worse, considered hate speech?

It seems to me that what is considered offensive depends on what is currently popular in the mainstream…?? what kind of world do we live in? LOL

I think that’s a good point. The doodle certainly went over my head. I didn’t even think of LGBT issues at all when I saw it until I came across this thread. 🤷 But in looking at the quote and considering the context, I can see that’s most likely what they were going for.

I know Google was publicly opposed to Proposition 8 in California a few years back. That is something to be upset with them over. Google acknowledging that gay people have as much right to be Olympians as straight people is not something that need raise our ire.

It’s a rainbow flag with the following written bellow.

“The practice of sport is a human right,” reads the quote from the Olympic Charter underneath a rainbow-colored sports doodle. “Every individual must have the possibility of practicing sport, without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.” Olympic Charter

It isn’t difficult to see why many people interpret it as a dig at Russia’s anti-gay laws.
Google is really out of line in this doodle. What Russia banned is LGBT propaganda directed at minors. Openly gay athletes were not banned in the olympics, if I am correct. In fact., two US openly gay athletes are joining there. They’re making an issue about something that isn’t really an issue in the Sochi olympics. For me, this is done in bad taste.

I’m also against unjust discrimination vs LGBT people, such as when they are banned from participating in the Olympics. But corrupting minors with LGBT propaganda is quite another thing.

Edit: Okay. It’s official: i’ve changed my safari search to Bing.

If you boycott/criticize Google are you going to do the same with NBC and their affiliates and advertisers? I heard the some comments that I think were unnecessary from whoever was doing the commenting including some sort of seekrit meaning in the song that accompanied the Russian athletes and the “relationship” that Putin has with one of the torch bearers that "needs to be mentioned.’ Okay, don’t quote me on that last one but they suggested it needed to be mentioned, because, it’s so relevant to the Games. Are you going to ignore the Games (and the hard work of the athletes and organizers) since the president of the IOC make a very pointed statement about not discriminating against* anyone*? I wasn’t expecting those things but there they are.

Bing is a neat sound but if I want excellent search results I’ll use Google.

They changed the picture back to classic…
Bing is ok, duckduck is light on resources…the choice is more by habit.

That law’s idea of “propaganda” is vague and broad, probably purposefully. If one of those openly gay athletes has their significant other there watching and then runs over to give them a kiss to celebrate a win, they could be arrested for “propaganda” since kids might have seen it.

Beyond the laws, the culture over there is disgusting in relation to the way homosexuals are being treated. Beatings in public, kidnappings and torture, these things are being ignored by police and supported by much of the public. It’s a disgrace.

Yes, if I can help it. I think I am not morally obliged to boycott, but I’m at least morally deterred.

Public display of homosexual affection can indeed be scandalous to children. But erotic acts between heterosexual couples should be censured as well, I think, for the same reason.

As for the abuses etc, aren’t they supposed to be illegal regardless of the target? If they’re ignored, then indeed it’s a disgraceful lack of implementation.

Remember the good old days when search engines were just search engines, and they didn’t get involved in politics or human rights or any of those sticky subjects?

Anyway, this doodle also went right over my head, but I believe the purpose of the doodle was to show that homosexuals are equal and deserve respect and dignity, which is what everyone should stand for. There are no laws in Russia protecting homosexuals who are discriminated against for their sexuality. However, if openly gay athletes represented Russia in the Winter Olympics, then it was unnecessary for Google to make this doodle.

By the way, people switching to Bing: Microsoft is pro-choice; and Goodsearch is owned by Yahoo, which has a pretty bad habit of reproducing extremely liberal (as in pro-choice and gay rights) articles.

What exactly is wrong with LGBT?

Even if your response is simply that your “God” says it’s bad, how can you rectify that with the notion of a benevolent all-loving “God”?

Also, in the same verse where the Bible says homosexuality is bad, it also says the same thing about eating shrimp, wearing mixed fibers, and I believe shaving. How do you justify you behavior with that?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with homosexuals, bisexuals or transgendered. They are people too and are to be loved and respected like any other living creature. I have a homosexual friend and I will always love and respect him.

The parts you are referring to in the Bible about eating shrimp, wearing mixed fibers and shaving are all found in the book of Leviticus. It is a book aimed only at the Levites, a strict tribe from which priests were selected from, who needed to maintain a higher sense of purity (since they were to become priests). Christians only have to follow the rules instilled by Jesus in the New Testament (since he came “not to abolish the old Covenant, but to fulfill it”), and homosexual acts are condemned in the New Testament, as they are against nature and do not result in the creation of children.

You are obviously better than most of these people, but you say homosexual acts are unnatural, which is absolutely false. It has been observed in the behavior of all primates and the majority of sexually reproducing animals. And the fact that it doesn’t bare children is irrelevant because you may as well ban barren couples from marriage.

I really am not better than any of these people. They are good Christians that are just trying to follow God’s teachings, like me (which I sometimes fail at, but I try). But thank you anyway. 🙂

It is true that many animal species exhibit homosexual behavior, and in that sense, no it isn’t unnatural since these animals (as well as true homosexual humans) are born with these desires and impulses (although I must point out that some ‘homosexual behavior’ observed in animals is just two animals of the same gender raising a child, with no sexual acts involved). What I meant was that homosexual acts were unnatural in the sense that it couldn’t and never could result in children, which is the entire point of sex.

A homosexual couple has no chance of ever conceiving no matter what they do, while heterosexual couples are the only natural way to create human life. Infertile heterosexual couples can still have children through other non-sexual methods such as artificial insemination or surrogacy (these aren’t methods that are morally acceptable in the Catholic Church, but I’m just giving examples), while homosexual couples still need an egg/sperm donor to have kids. Also, certain (not all) causes for infertility in women can be reversed with proper diet, quitting using tobacco products, reducing stress, and ceasing the consumption of hormone-altering drugs such as antidepressants or steroids. Infertility in men can almost always be treated with minor surgery, as the normal cause for infertility in men is the blockage of semen during sex due to a previous surgery or natural, treatable disorder.

Why does everyone here hate homosexuals? Or, you know, what they do?

They’re not poisoning children, just telling a kid that homosexuality isn’t bad doesn’t mean they’ll become one. And even if it did, who cares? The Earth is overpopulated, and gay people are fun at parties.

If this is what Christianity is, then I’m glad I left.

You fail to account for people who simply cannot have children, which happens. Women who can’t produce eggs and men who can’t produce sperm. What about them?

Also, LGBT couples can also have children through other means, lesbians can use donors to artificially inseminate themselves, gay male couples can use a separate female to develop a child of theirs.

Your arguments simply don’t stand up.

Lastly, you don’t simply hate gay people, and most of these people do. I’d say that makes you better than them. Trying to follow the scripture doesn’t make you good, it makes you gullible. Have you read that bronze-age text? It’s more filled with hatred than any other book I’ve ever read.
