Okay I would like to congratulate our new pope, Pope Francis šŸ‘ I pray that he leads the church well through the wisdom and grace of our lord. I am so glad that we finally have a new pope. This week has been a tough one for me since I did temporarily leave home for a bit. In my family we have a split. My mom is a Pentecostal and my dad’s side is Catholic and I lean more to Catholicism when it comes to my religion. Anyways now I am back and my mom has allowed me to attend mass  I am very surprised at this. My anti catholic mother has allowed me to set foot into a catholic church with permission. Now there are exceptions to this. First if she is home and she wants to go to church then we go with her to her church but if shes at work, studying, or tired and doesn’t want to go to work then I can go to mass whenever I want to. She works almost every Sunday too so it will be about 50/50 šŸ‘ So happy 😃 she said if youre going to another church then I hope you get involved in this one. I don’t know what that means but all I know is that I can attend mass now as long as I say I am attending mass :excited: So a new pope and I can observe mass almost every Sunday. Good deal  haha sorry I thought I could share my excitement. Second my mom wants me to really study catholicism and show i have taken an interest in it. I was wondering if some wiser catholics could teach me about the different beliefs of protestants and catholics? I know a little because I did go to catholic school for a couple years and attended mass there and over the summer. But my mom asked me a question that I couldnt fully answer. She asked what is it that you believe that I don’t. Because I wasnt entirely sure what a good answer was maybe I figured I should really brush up on my religion studies 🤷

Well first off you have to decide for yourself. If you are leaning toward the Catholic faith then good for you. You are a person with free choice and you have to follow where the Holy Spirit guides you. You appear to be an intelligent young lady and will most likely make the right decision for yourself.

How wonderful that your mother has kindly responded to your wishes.
That is a great grace.
May God continue to lead, guide, and protect.
May God bless your mother and your entire family

First and foremost, congratulations šŸ™‚

Regarding brushing up on your studies… I will make the assumption based on your post that you have not yet received the Catholic Sacraments (Baptism, Reconcilliation, 1st Communion, or Confirmation). So. A good place to start would be to try to attend Catechism/RCIA which will give you the formal teaching as well as prepare you for the Sacraments and actually becoming Catholic (it will allow you to make a fully informed decision on whether or not Catholicism is right for you). I don’t know how much latitude your mother will give you regarding this but you should attend if at all possible. It will also give you the ā€œthis is what the Catholic Church teaches and what Catholics believeā€ information your mother asked you about.

As far as her question… that is tough for anyone to answer when it is worded so vaguely. Protestant denominations vary in their differences from Catholicism, and I am not well versed in the core tenets of belief that the Pentecostal church adheres to. You could start with the core tenets of the Catholic Church and take the discussion from there. The Apostle’s Creed and the Nicene Creed are good for this information.

Also, ask at the Catholic Church you plan to attend for a copy of the ā€œCatechism of the Catholic Churchā€ as well as the ā€œSt Joseph Baltimore Catechismā€ (it’s not quite such dry reading as the former) but you should read both. And specifically for your mother’s question, Karl Keating is a stellar Catholic Apologist and his book ā€œCatholicism and Fundamentalismā€ would probably answer many of the questions on the differences as well as why we do what we do as Catholics. I believe there he actually has a forum section on this site regarding apologetics (btw, apologetics is the explanation and defense of the faith just in case you hadn’t heard of it before šŸ‘ )

Hope this helps.

Well I was technically born into the catholic church because my grandmother was catholic but she died when i was around 2 or 3 so my dad stopped going and id go with my aunt and brother whenever she was willing to go. I think my dad has my baptism certificate and then I was baptized again in an apostolic/pentecostal church. Since my parents arent together anymore and I don’t see my dad I have no idea where I was baptized or if he still has the certificate. But because of all of that my mom never let me get my first communion and refused to baptize my brother who also will be attending mass with me on sundays. It will be a lot of fun for me relearning the faith since i havent been to mass since september but come september again I will be in RCIA

It took a good year but she has finally said its okay if you want to go to mass. In fact I am allowed to participate in other things not just mass. I really hope that I am able to grasp a better understanding of the catholic faith

RCIA doesn’t start until September again it being almost easter and all. Actually because I am so young I might end up in RCIT instead of RCIA just because It would be beneficial to learn with people in my age groups as well as I have recieved the sacrement of baptism already just not reconciliation, first communion, or confirmation. Its sort of funny because I was in catholic school and I could have done the first communion class at school but my mom didnt want me to and at the time we were at a baptist/pentecostal church (we bounced between both and my mom didnt like the baptist church so we left) I am teaching my brother the mass because I am making him go as well because he is interested in catholicism as well. Thank you for your post 😃 it was very informative and i really got a lot out of it.
