It has a tassel and I’m nervous what people will say! I’ve decided to wear it on Fridays as a respect to the idea of the Crucifixion in the Jesus Prayer (admitting that I’m a sinner and need saving in Christ) but I live in a small town with NO Eastern Catholics so I don’t know how I’m going to explain what it is when people ask. (I’m Latin by the way)

Hello,

I’m an Eastern Orthodox and I have one that is made out of wool. When people ask me I just tell them they’re prayer beads.

If you notice you see a lot of people wear “mala” beads which are the buddhist ones, they’ve become quite popular among young adults to wear.

No biggy. Tell them what it is and if you’re proud of them they’ll sense it.

Thanks

I have never lived in a place where anyone would question or make a comment about any kind of jewelry, let alone an obviously religious object worn on the person, except possibly as a compliment. Where do you live that you expect people to notice let alone comment on such a thing? If you are wearing it as a sacramental, or out of religious conviction or devotion, the reaction of others should surely be immaterial, of no consequence to your decision.

My 14 yr old daughter is a jewelry maker; she actually makes bracelets, necklaces, etc to order, and has made a number of both Eastern Orthodox prayer beads for people, as well as Buddhist mala beads. She’s very good at it, and they look very professional.

She just finished a set of amethyst mala beads, in fact, for a Buddhist friend of ours who ordered them.

If people ask…

Most will think they Eastern (non-Christian) religion paraphanalia that is very much en vogue among a certain set of the trendy. I commented how lovely one woman’s chotki was and she looked at me puzzled. They were Buddhist as she was practicing nothing really. Oh the irony in finding out her father was UGCC.

What can ya do?

Chotki are worn - but the Iesusova Prayers is to be worn on the lips - not as respect of some idea - but as actual prayer.

Chotki for wrist must of course be small - maybe you have aso seen Lestovka - used in old times and by Staroveri. They have knots like steps to emphasize that prayers lead to heaven. These have such things like I think you mean “tassels” at end. Вот

Here are some very nice Chotki made to be worn around the wrist with no tassels if that helps. 🙂 The finger prayer rope is a bit odd, never seen one of those before, not sure if one could really count prayers on it all that well… I wear the wool one with the myrtlewood bead, maybe one of these would feel less ostentatious and you could just carry your regular prayer rope in your pocket? It’s a great reminder to pray… and they’re pretty inexpensive luckily. Plus when I don’t have my regular prayer rope with me I’ll sometimes just whip it off and use it. 🙂

God Bless!

I find it interesting that the Eastern Christian Jesus beads have a tassel. What does it stand for?

The reason why I find it curious is because Tibetan Buddhist mala beads also have a tassel…and they are worn on the wrist also, much of the time, as a sort of bracelet.

(I don’t know the significance of the tassel for the Buddhists, either.)

I would just wear it…To heck with what people say…I am disgusted that people are now wearing a rosary as a piece of jewelry

I hope that doesn’t happen to your chotki…I often wear a chaplet, and I notice Aaron Neville does too… I say go for it

The Eastern Christian tassel is used to dry one’s tears.

Do not be afraid, God is with you.

I think wearing it on Fridays is a great idea

It is the Holy Spirit Who removes doubt and fear. So, appeal to Him, and He will give you the words of explanation for those who ask. You feel very much as the early Christians did, since we are entering a post-Christian era, and many will have no idea what it is or why you wear it.

With renewed courage, you will be able to wear it on those days in which you love Christ!
