Given that the Vatican has banned Catholics from so much as talking about women deacons or priests, is it surprising that some women are opting to fast-forward to action? They aren’t discussing whether women should be ordained; they aren’t asking for permission to be ordained; they are just doing what, as they see it, a church crying “priest shortage” needs them to do. These are women who have faithfully served the church in many ways, putting their own wishes on hold. Until finally, they have said, “Enough.”

We find it fascinating that while church officials assert these “simulated” ordinations lack meaning, some of the women have received the Vatican’s highest penalty – formal excommunication. In other cases, as in the recent St. Louis ordinations, the hierarchy has tried various tactics aimed at bringing these women to heel.

How on earth can a periodical that calls itself Catholic run an editorial so opposed to Catholic teaching? The Church should sue them to force them to drop the word Catholic, as it is quite misleading.

What we need is more strong faithful men to hear and answer God’s call to serve as priests and bishops and teach the faithful the Truth whether it be in regards to an all male preisthood, the sanctity of male/female marriage, the sanctity of life, or the sanctity of the marital act. IMO, they should spend much more time on these topics than social justice issues. Social justice is important, but there is little need to explain this to most Catholics (even the nominal ones). Most tend to understand the importance of caring for the poor, but there is a terrible lack of understanding when it comes to issues such as the sanctity of marriage, the marital act, and the life of the unborn and the aged.

I see this as the NCR viewing the Catholic Church as more than just Rome proper, but the global church down to the level of the people. The Church is a diverse place and is not always represented at the highest levels of Rome.

As I recall the bishops asked them to stop using the title Catholic several years ago. However, they are not the type to be worried by what the bishops say.
 
Jesus prayed that we (The Church) would be one in faith even as He and the Father are one. In order to accomplish this, he gave us shepherds (Bishops and Priests) to guide us. The bishops of the world, in communion with each other and the Holy Father in Rome are the guideposts He gave us.

If the conensus of the Bishops of the world have determined that Christ intends that the priesthood be restricted to men, then we have Christ’s assurance that whatever they (the bishops as inheritors of the authority of the apostles) bind on earth is bound in Heaven.

It was this authority that has been used to unify the Church in the face of numerous heresies. It was the utter denial of the Church’s teaching authority that lead to Protestant Reformation. If the editors want to protest the authority of the Pope and the bishops, perhaps they should call it the National Protestant Register.

Why fascinating? The case is not dissimilar to printing counterfeit money. “Simulated” money also lacks any real value. Would this writer also find it “fascinating” that convicted counterfeiters often get very high criminal penalties?

I believe the quote is, “and must be believed by all the faithful.” (please correct me if I’m wrong)

That would cause us to not discuss the possibility of the faithful NOT believing.

I compare it to the statement, “the earth is round.” If that is believed by all the faithful - why would one continue to discuss the disk on the back of a giant turtle?

That’s why the “must be believed” statement is so powerful.

I thought that particular term was dropped because of the homophonic relationship between the last five syllables and the word “bacchanalian”, which conjures up the unpleasant implication that those who adhere to the Turtle Hypothesis are also libertines.

I stand corrected. I’ve tried to remove such insensitive terms from my vocabulary. Obviously, I’m a “Turtlebackslider”
 
Well, I’ll just get out my “When I’m elected Pope and reinstate the Inquisition” List and put the NCR right at the top…
