From the Indy Star:

The intruders then entered the church’s main sanctuary and set a fire on the altar using artificial plants covered in an accelerant, but the fire burned out before spreading, police said.

Police do not believe the break-in was a hate-related crime, but are investigating all possibilities.
I hope that when Inidana’s finest are finished with their donuts they take a moment to think about this. THE PERPS SET THE ALTAR ON FIRE!

I can understand the braking and entering and stealing cash as just your typical low life, but entering the sanctuary and taking the time to build and set a fire? If this isn’t hate crime, what is?

Doing the same thing in a Muslim place of worship would be a hate crime. This will just continue to be labeled as a robbery and prank.

I live about 45 minutes from this church in Auburn. This sort of thing is almost unthinkable in this area, which is mostly rural. I’m sure this will never be labeled as a hate crime. Wrong religion, I guess.

Believe it or not, but the FBI DOES track hate crimes toward Catholics. Heck, they even track hate crimes towards Protestants. In 2004 there were 57 anti-Catholic hate crimes according to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report (fbi.gov/ucr/hc2004/hctable1.htm)

And I do agree, setting fire to the altar is more than a prank. Someone took the time to use an substance they know to be highly flammable on the the altar of a Catholic church. With what motivation? Just arson, or something more? Either way it was perpetrated against a house of worship, and people don’t try to destroy churches without a good (ahem, bad) reason.

Oh no. 😦 I hope they catch the arsonist and punish him the maximum extent of the law so long as that does not include the death penalty.

Here’s the best part, the fire burned out. Maybe the Holy Spirit took the wind out of the fire. Wouldn’t that be a miracle.

all such incidents involving churches are treated as a federal crime and investigated by federal authorities.

OF COURSE THIS IS A HATE CRIME!!!

William Donahue should be all over this -

but so far the Catholic League is silent.

Unbelievable, simply unbelievable.

Why is this unbelievable? I am sure that the Catholic League would get involved if authorities failed to investigate the incident or to prosecute known perpetrators, or if some known person(s) or organization(s) of influence were responsible for or supported the incident. But none of these seems to be the case here. Should the Catholic League issue press releases like this every time such incidents occur?
The Catholic League:
William Donahue, with a stern frowny face told a group of reporters today:

“The Catholic League is strongly opposed to acts of vandalism by unknown perpetrators.”
If Dr. Donahue were to do this in every such situation, he would probably not have the time to do anything else, and the media would soon tire of hearing him cry wolf. I think Dr. Donahue knows what he is doing in choosing his fights , where his involvement might be expected to do some good. And of course should this situation develop in such a way as to merit greater attention, I am sure the Catholic League will jump in with both fists swinging.

A few years back a group of pro-homosexual fanatics stormed the cathedral in Montreal. The spray-painted anti-Catholic slurrs on the walls, tore up hymnals and missals, knocked over candlesticks, threw soiled undergarments and used condoms around the sanctuary and attempted to pull down the Tabernacle and defile the Blessed Sacrament before being stopped by a group of American tourists. They were arrested, but the police refused to press charges or acknowledge their acts as a hate crime, instead calling the incident a demonstration.

You even accidently trip a random man on the street who turns out to be gay and you get 5 years in prison.
