Firing of gay teachers at Cor Jesu draws outcry

The local media has been all over this story, reporting on a rally to be held this morning at the school. It made me sick to think about the chaos that could descend on the school, the possible media coverage and twisting, the disruption to the First Friday Mass today and also to the school day in general for students, staff and parents, etc., so I was concerned enough about the rally to go to CJ this morning in support of the school. There wasn’t much of a turn-out for the rally. I saw only about two dozen people standing in front of the school holding signs, a rainbow flag and a rainbow banner. Perhaps that is a reflection of the power of prayer :).

Following is the story about the rally from the local paper.

"Supporters of fired gay teachers rally at Cor Jesu

After the termination of two gay faculty members at Cor Jesu Academy, dozens rallied today to support the teachers at the all-girls Catholic high school in the Affton area.

Alumnae; members of the nondenominational Metropolitan Community Church of Greater St. Louis; Faith Aloud, an organization concerned with reproductive issues; and the marriage equality group ShowMeNoHate all met at 7:45 a.m. outside the school’s doors."…

Yep.

Some Cor Jesu alumnae and the secular media really wanted this “controversy” to grow and gather steam, but it really hasn’t grown much and hopefully it will end now. That is why I came to CAF for support and to vent (thank you all for allowing that :)). I did not want to further the secular media’s goal or the goal of those alumnae who appear to not understand some of the lessons taught when they attended Cor Jesu or the goal of others at the rally who had their own agenda in this.

Quoted in blue below is a great letter to the editor of our local paper, which articulates my thoughts well (we too sent our only daughter to Cor Jesu). Of course, there are dissenting letters too, but I am happy to share this one.

"Paper again shows its anti-Catholic bias

I am disgusted with the Post-Dispatch for once again displaying its anti-Catholic bias and anti-Christian platform. The article “Cor Jesu firings blasted” (Sept. 3) not only is not front-page newsworthy of a major metropolitan newspaper but also belongs more appropriately on the editorial page under the heading “Catholic Bashing.”

In case you are unaware, the very reason Catholic parents choose a wonderful Catholic school like Cor Jesu Academy for their daughters is primarily for its religious teaching of our faith, morals and values. Catholic parents know that they could send their girls to any public school to get a free education, but they are willing to sacrifice economically for their daughters to receive a truly Catholic education at Cor Jesu. They do this because they love their daughters and want to make sure they receive an education that will reinforce the morals and values that they teach them at home.

We sent our only daughter to Cor Jesu and we are now proud to say that she is sending our two granddaughters there, too. They, like their mom, are receiving an excellent education. Cor Jesu is a very special place. It not only prepares its girls in the traditional academics, but also prepares them to be Christian women of values who will be the next leaders in the nation, state and community.

But this is soo true! I found myself nodding when I read this because I feel like when we practice our faith, we get called out. But anyone else practicing their faith in full gets a pat on the back. It’s very sad to me

That’s because this issue isn’t all about some twisted idea of “equality”. It seems like it’s also about getting votes for left-wing politicians who need massive minority votes, and a lot of minorities in the USA are dedicated to their religions.

That’s why we’ll probably never see a gay rights activist sue or mess around with a mosque, synagogue or Southern African American Church.

Also, Catholics don’t have a large presence in the grievance industry and we really don’t have secularists/liberals come racing to our defense like they do with say Islam.

Just think what would happen if one replaced “Cor Jesu” with madrassa.

I think we’d see a different reaction altogether.

Thank you, SuperLuigi! I just finished writing a letter to Cor Jesu’s principal, which I am going to send along with a donation, and I thought, “How can I get others to do the same?” So I thought of posting something on the Catholic Answers Forum – and saw that you have read my mind!

I agree with everything everyone has posted here. I sent all my children to Catholic schools, and for all the money I spent, I expected them to teach and be witnesses of Catholic doctrine. The mainstream media has no concept of what the true Catholic teachings are and will do anything to continue perpetuating misinformation and prejudice.
