First confession coming up ;)

I have to admit i am a bit nervous probably because i just want it to be done already so i don’t have to think about it. First confession is next week during the class

I also read in another old thread a person can’t go through FIRST confession until after being baptized? unless i mis-read it ?.

There’s one thing i’m confused about, i read on here in a old thread about someone who isn’t baptized would get baptized months before Easter. As for me i will be baptized during the Easter vigil, does every church do things alittle differently? or if you do want to get baptized early you can ask for it to be done before then?.

Seems like the questions i had was answered last night and i am left with more questions today lol.

Hi LilyoftheValley. I can’t answer your questions about baptism. I’m not sure of how that exactly works today in RCIA. My son went through it but I don’t know what all the rules were, he had already been baptized. I just wanted to say congratulations on your first confession coming up. I still get nervous before going into the confessional, after many years, but I feel great when I come out. Like the weight of the world has been lifted from me.

Baptism is the “gateway” to the other sacraments.
If you are a non-baptized person, being received into the Church at Easter through the RCIA program, you do not need to go to confession before hand.

If you have been baptized, either in the Catholic tradition, or in most Protestant denominations, you will not be re-baptized, therefore you must make a confession prior to receiving first Eucharist & Confirmation.

That’s correct. You have to be baptized before you can receive any other sacraments.

Perhaps the person was talking about a conditional baptism which is a whole other matter. Or perhaps the person was in danger of death, in which case baptism can be done immediately.

At the Easter Vigil adults are baptized, confirmed, and receive communion. Since baptism removes all sins you will be as pure and clean as you possibly can be.

Your first confession would take place sometime after your baptism. I’d suggest the period of mystagogy – the time up to Pentecost – as a good time to go for the first time.

Since RCIA groups often include both those seeking baptism and those who are already baptized, the teams may forget that those who are not yet baptized can’t and don’t need to go to confession ahead of time.

I’m in RCIA classes now as well and not baptized. I spoke with Father yesterday in the interview and he did let me know that I wouldn’t have to go to confession. To be baptized isn’t that basically washing away all your past sins. Thats how I understand it.

Thats something I don’t fully understand. In the bible it always says repent and be baptized. Do unbaptized adults at least examine their consciences and express contrition for their sins privately prior to baptism, or are all prior sins forgiven without any thought to your past?

I just left a message for my pastor as well i am sure he’s going to tell me i wouldn’t need to go to confession til after baptism. However my husband’s first confession will be next week since he is baptized.

The first stirrings of repentance is one of the requirements to go through the Rite of Acceptance and become a catechumen. That deepens during the catechumenate and reaches its apex during the scrutinies.

RCIA is not something the people go through mindlessly.

When my sister’s kids went through RCIA, they did not have to go to Confession until after they received the sacraments & were not required to do so prior as they were not yet baptized . My mother tries to take them a few times a year now.

Are you absolutely positive you are stating this accurately? Not to be unkind, but this just doesn’t make sense. Only a baptized person can receive the other sacraments.

Yup, i am certain according to the lead of the RCIA class who is preparing my husband and I if the priest says that’s how we’ll do it that’s what we’ll be doing. I will be getting my first communion AFTER baptism which will be taken place during the vigil .

That’s not possible. One must be baptized to receive other sacraments. Perhaps the message was mangled, and “first communion” and “first confession” got mixed up? An unbaptized person cannot receive the sacrament of reconciliation.

Well, it seems that you have raised the proper questions to the proper people, perhaps more than once, so all you can do is follow their direction.

With no offense to you, I must say that the information as it is presented here is a bit confusing to some of us and on the surface is different than the procedures we are used to.

Probably not.

But you might tell him you’re confused about what baptism does for a person. Apparently he doesn’t believe it forgives sins, so what’s the point of being baptized?

Agreed. It sounds as if you have asked in which order the sacraments are to be received. Instead, I would ask, “Father, with all due respect, everything that I am reading online seems to say that one cannot make one’s first confession if one is not yet baptized. Indeed, one cannot receive ANY other sacrament until one is first baptized. If this is the case, then how would I be able to make my first confession several days BEFORE my baptism? Can you direct me to something that I can read that explains this? Thank you, Father.”

In my RCIA group the baptized met with the priest to make their first confession and those of us that were unbaptized ( myself and my husband) met with him to discuss any last minute questions and also this was an opportunity to discuss with the priest any particular sins that may have been weighing on our souls. Even though we were not officially receiving the sacrament of reconciliation.
