I am in the process of converting to the Catholic faith from non-denominational Christianity. I have been having many ups and downs on this walk, sometimes I feel so sure that the Catholic church has the truth, and other times I am so discouraged by some things I perceive as being untruths. When I am full of faith I feel I am being led by God to the church, and when I am uncertain I feel like I am being deceived by Satan into believing the church is the true faith.

One thing I have had issue with is the adoration of the Eucharist. While the true presence of Christ is what I would say initially led me to the Catholic church, I was surprised to find that people actually worship the presence outside of Mass. This seemed to me extremely strange and like idolatry. I couldn’t resolve the dilemma that even if the presence is truly there, had Christ intended for it to be worshiped? This was a huge block for me, I felt sick and so discouraged, if the truth isn’t with the Catholics, than where is it? I don’t see the fullnesses of it anywhere else out of the numerous denominations of church’s I’ve been to. If the Catholic faith is not the truth then I am lost, the Bible does not make complete sense without it.

Yesterday after my RCIA class I went to visit the Eucharist. I had gone the week before for the Benediction but I just stood by the door and watched, I felt a peace there and an awe that there was a woman prostrate on the ground singing to the Lord, but I was still skeptical.

This time I had time to sit in the Adoration Chapel for at least 10 minutes. I went into the chapel and feeling nervous and uncertain I did not genuflect (I am still new to the Catholic way of things and get very hung up on genuflecting, which knee do I take when and where do I do it? At the door, at my seat? If the presence is not here I don’t want to bow to bread) I prayed, Lord, I don’t want to offend you! If your presence is here I will worship you here.

I took a seat in the front and looked at the Eucharist, closed my eyes and put my head in hands to pray. I still felt very nervous, maybe because I didn’t want the other people in the room to look at me.

Eventually the nervousness subsided and I felt the Presence.

I have never felt such an other worldly presence in my whole life. I took a moment to reflect on it and discern what it was. The only description I could come up with at that moment was “The force that has created all things.” This feeling was SO strong, and if this is God I have never felt His presence in such a way despite all the times I thought I had felt Him with me.

I was paralyzed and didn’t know what to do, I tried to pray about things in my life that I know are not pleasing to His Will, but mostly I just sat there with my hands clasped in a state of complete AWE. I felt completely enveloped in this Presence.
Reflecting on it on my drive home the word Hug came to mind and I could see myself sitting in that room with Jesus’ arms around me, though this Presence was so powerful I couldn’t imagine it hugging me at the time.

I am still in a state of shock I think, after this experience. I find myself looking for Mary for the first time in my walk, for the first time I can see why someone might be so humbled by God that they feel unworthy to go straight to Him and instead they cling to the full humanity of Mary.

At this point I think I can say that my issues are resolved, there is no way I can turn from this Presence, and there is no way I can believe its all a lie. My hunger to take part in the Body and Blood of our Lord is of course stronger than ever. And I feel a strong urge to tell everyone and evangelize now, but I wonder if this Presence is as real to anyone else as it was to me last night. And I wonder if it will always be there for me.

What an beautiful story!! I’m so very happy for you - welcome home to the One True Faith!!

This brought me to tears of joy. Not always will we feel His presence like this but we will always know He is there. I had an experience like that once, I was in the midst of much turmoil and could not make a decision. I didn’t know if I was strong enough to do what I thought I was being called to do. I asked Jesus to please help me, I heard Him say “Trust in Me”, I heard Him and I listened to Him. No better advice could be given. Praise God.

What a true blessing! I always enjoy reading the wonderful ways Our Lord draws people to His Church. God bless.

Hi! 🙂 this is so great to hear! 🙂 I want to reply to your post bit by bit cause I feel I have so much to say, lol sorry!!

I’m also in the process of converting to Catholicism from non denom. Protestantism!! 😃 I’ve also had many ups and downs. (I think all converts have, that’s normal =)) there are various reasons for the “downs”… sometimes it is the enemy trying to confuse us, it can also be God allowing us trials so that we learn to have faith without feelings. And so that we can learn to trust. Ever since I started this journey to Catholicism, God has been teaching me more and more about this!! I’ve actually learned so much and it’s been a pretty awesome journey, although filled with much doubt and confusion too. Don’t worry, God always gives us grace and strength to reach the end though =)

About Eucharistic Adoration. That’s so great btw that the Real Presence of our Lord is what lead you to the Church!! =) I hear that a lot from converts, and that’s my story too. I also struggled with Adoration at first. The reason it’s oki to worship the Eucharist is because it IS Jesus =) it’s His Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. He’s just hidden there, we only see bread, but really it’s our LIVING, risen Savior.

btw, about genuflecting. I think when you go to Mass, you genuflect right beside your pew. When you go to Adoration, it can be when you first walk in (and out) and also if you want before you sit down. There’s no ‘rule’ about this =) just do whatever you feel demonstrates the respect you want to show. Also, the Eucharist is ALWAYS present in Catholic churches. You don’t have to worry about it being just bread. There’s always a consecrate Host in the Tabernacle, and at Adoration, it definitely is always consecrated 🙂 if you’re unsure, just check for the red lamp above the Tabernacle. (it should burn)
Also, to answer your other question, when you genuflect you kneel on your right knee…well I do, at least. I’m not sure about others.

oki… now to the rest of your story 🙂

I enjoyed so much reading about your experience!!! 😃 it’s always awesome reading about people’s first Adoration experiences and yours is so beautiful. I love how you took a seat at the front. That’s what I always do too 🙂 I heard there was a Saint who visited Our Lord many times throughout the day and she always approached Him as closely as she could.

I have to say also that I’ve never felt God’s presence as much as I do in the Eucharist. I had some nice worship experiences at my old non denom. church. But I have to say it was never as powerful as this. I think God really has a way of showing us that He’s truly present here =) I mean…think about this… He is everywhere spiritually, but He’s physically present in the Eucharist… it’s His Body and Blood… it’s really powerful, and just think of actually RECEIVING the Eucharist into yourself! 🙂 I think that’s pretty amazing.

(to be continued)

(part 2)

The first time I ever went to Mass, I couldn’t receive Communion of course, but I went up for a blessing. And when the priest blessed me, I suddenly had such a big awareness of the Eucharist and I felt Jesus in me spiritually. The word “hug” came to me as well at the time, and also during some times of Adoration as well. I think He does embrace us in a way in the Eucharist 🙂 it’s a type of union with Him.

That’s also wonderful that you’re thinking about Mary. It was VERY difficult for me to come to the point of accepting her and the Catholic teachings about her. But I think God showed me that they are all so true. She is a real Mother to us and she leads us closer to her Son. If we are devoted to her, she will help us do His will. Often converts from Protestantism struggle with Mary, but God has a way of working this out 😉 it just takes some time.

Over time, God has shown me that the Catholic Church is true. I think that maybe the experience you received at Adoration was God trying to encourage you to keep going…letting you know that yes He is present there, and that you can trust Him on that.

I wanted to comment on your last sentence… would you always feel this way… really only God knows, 🙂 I can only talk about myself. I noticed that the first several times I always felt His presence very strongly. Then, I went through periods of dryness. Sometimes, very intense dryness. If this ever happens to you, don’t despair, don’t blame yourself, don’t think it’s your fault. It’s just a test of faith and that’s all. Try to remember this experience you had for the times ahead. There are many people who don’t feel anything during Mass or Adoration, not because they are less holy than those who do, but because God wants them to rely on faith perhaps. He gives others experiences of His presence to encourage them. Basically, He gives everyone what He knows is right for them at the time 🙂 whatever happens next time youll go to Adoration, whether you’ll feel this way again, or won’t feel anything, thank Him for bringing you there and for showing you the truth, and then just love Him and talk to Him. Even if you don’t feel anything. He’s so pleased when we love Him despite feelings. When we take the time to visit Him in periods of dryness.

I think Adoration is one of the most wonderful things about the Church and helps us appreciate the Mass. Also, devotion to Mary and writings of the Saints (such as St Therese of Lisieux, St Liguori, St Faustina, etc) are so helpful as well.

Anyway, that’s really great to hear that God has revealed Himself to you in this way, and I hope and pray everything will go well with your conversion hugs I tried to share some of my experiences and thoughts with you just to let you know that I’ve been through some similar things, it seems, and many converts talk about the Real Presence drawing them to the Church 🙂 praise God!

God bless you.

wow! 🙂 praise God 🙂 and that is soo true.

Mommomamats,
you have been given the gift of faith, through the revelation of Jesus Christ Hismelf.

Your experience was similar to mine, except I was in at home in bed, praying for the gift of faith. When Jesus came to me, I felt all what you felt, but at the same time, I was filled with a bright light, a being who was full of compassion, love and forgiveness. I knew without a doubt, it was Jesus who revealed Himself to me.

That was 34 years ago. I never looked back.

Thanks for sharing!

God Bless
Jim

Wow … I had a similar experience about two years ago before converting … it’s great! 👍

YESSS!!! Everytime! I have the exact feeling you described. Euphoria, elation, a complete knowing that its TRUE.
I can barely last 2 minutes without crying.
My husband who is not Catholic has accompanied me (I don’t think he quite gets the idea of real presence 'cause he comes from a matzo and grape juice symbol background) but he has commented how everything just feels “okay” after visiting that chapel 😉
I think I’ve heard people say 'You don’t have to believe in the Sun to get a tan." Well Eucharistic Adoration is a tanning bed for the soul. Soak it in people, soak it in!

Thank you everyone for your replies stories and encouragement. I think my real reason for posting this was not only to share it but to find out if this is what everyone feels or if it at least is a common occurence.
I knew about the reserved host in the tabernacles and the red candles, I have felt a presence upon entering churches but I guess I didn’t fully grasp the reality of it. Maybe being in such a small room with the Eucharist made the presence more powerful? I don’t know…

I would definitely use the sun analogy for the way His Presence felt… it was like the warmth of the sun beating down on you on a chilly day… only it was the warmth of the Creator of the sun!

Thank you for sharing your wonderful story! Remember and cherish it, for there will be times when you “feel” nothing. I don’t know why this happens, but God surely knows what He’s doing. We just have to remember these events and trust that Father – and Son and Spirit – Knows Best!

Sometimes, I’ll go into the Adoration chapel without really wanting to be there – too busy or some other silly excuse. Soon, I find myself thinking, ‘boy, there’s no place I’d rather be.’ I think of Peter on the mountaintop, when he said, “Lord, it is good to be here.” God is good!

Remeber Fr. Groeschel’s oft-repeated story of the non-Catholic Christian black women who visit his NYC church during Eucharistic Adoration. He paraphrases their response as “I know that the sweet Lord Jesus is truly here!”

God bless,
Dan

Thank you for your beautiful story!

I find that, no matter how beautiful it is, a non-Catholic church feels sad, lonely and empty. And a Catholic church with Jesus in the tabernacle is always warm and welcoming, whether it’s beautiful or not.

And I call the Adoration Chapel the “Alternate Universe.”

I think you found that your fear, distaste and “gut feeling” were put there by Satan. How happy I am that our God has pushed him aside to let you see the Truth! Truly, he did not prevail. 🙂

Unfortunately I don’t feel anything while in Eucharistic Adoration. It is probably just a matter of time, or there is a good chance I don’t do something right. I do feel it while sitting in an empty church, though, as I’m facing the tabernacle and Jesus hanging on the Cross above it. Very profound and real. Strange I don’t get that same feeling in the Adoration Chapel…

welcome Home, and welcome to the beauty and reality of the Catholic Faith! 🙂 i am so glad beyond words to hear that you’ve had such an incredible experience with encountering God during Adoration, and that it has led you to fully believe in the Truth. your story is amazing, and i’ve actually had very similar experiences during Adoration that have touched my heart and life forever.

i was raised Catholic, but had a born-again experience on november 22, 2007, when i gave my heart to Jesus and felt His Presence, power and love overwhelm me so completely that i will never be able to forget it. for a year after that, i considered myself a nondenominational evangelical Christian—then, on december 1, 2008, i converted back to Catholicism, and ever since then, my relationship with God has deepened and matured considerably. i just wanted to share this with you because i can definitely relate to the idea of being discouraged throughout one’s walk in the Catholic Faith—actually, last night i was experiencing very serious doubts about Catholicism, and it was only when i spent some time in worship that i was healed of those doubts and the depression they had caused. what kept me holding on to the Catholic Faith throughout that difficult experience, which i believe was Satan trying to discourage me, was my unshakeable belief in the Real Presence of Jesus and all the ways He has been real, beautiful and loving to me during Adoration. i know exactly what you mean, though, about sometimes wondering if it is God or Satan who is leading you to the Church, and i am so glad that you have realized that it is God Who is leading you to what is the full Truth, and not Satan deceiving you. i am just so happy and excited for you, and will definitely keep you in my prayers.

i know exactly what you mean when you talk about the Presence of God being so real and powerful in Adoration. whenever i go to Adoration, i am just brought to my knees by the strong sense of Love and power that i feel so close all around me. i absolutely love Adoration, because it’s where i am able to experience, feel and hear God so clearly and beautifully and strongly, and i feel so close to Him, and His Love just envelops me so completely, and heals me of all my doubts. sometimes i have felt God’s Presence during my own times of private worship, but never like His Presence surrounds me during Adoration. i also know exactly what you mean when you talk about being paralyzed. all i am able to say during Adoration most of the time is: “I love You, Jesus.” i keep repeating this over and over because i can’t say anything else—i’m just so filled to overflowing with His Love and His amazing Presence.

that’s so beautiful, that you could feel His arms around you. ❤️ so many times i have felt the same thing, and it has reduced me to tears. i’m so glad that you now appreciate why Mary is so important, and will definitely pray that you grow closer to Her, and, of course, to Jesus. i definitely suggest that you pray the Rosary and develop a true devotion to Her, which will definitely bring you closer to Her. i’ve found that since i’ve started praying the Rosary daily, i’ve felt a stronger love for Her that was difficult for me to find before. here are some resources on Mary that i hope and pray will help you.

i’m so glad beyond words to hear that your issues have been resolved, and that you have experienced the beauty and love of Jesus’ Presence in Adoration. definitely tell others what you have experienced—pray that they may come to experience it as well. please know that the Presence has also been incredibly real to me, and that He will definitely always be there for you, not only in Adoration, but in Love within your heart.

just to share some of my own experiences with Adoration, on may 18, 2008, i attended a praise and worship night that included an hour and a half of Adoration, and during that time, while i was sitting in silence with Jesus, i felt this overwhelming sense of Love and then i heard Him tell me, very clearly, that He loved me. it literally brought me to tears. then, on august 21, 2008, i attended a very similar praise and worship night, and a woman there actually saw Jesus walking around the church, touching everyone on the shoulder and looking at each person with so much Love that it warmed her heart. ❤️ i will never forget either of those nights—it may not seem like much to some people who have experienced more, but they have meant everything to me.

mommommats, i’m so glad that you have had this experience. ❤️ please know that i will be keeping you in my constant thoughts and prayers, and i encourage you to return to Adoration. i will be praying for you and wish you luck as you come Home to the Catholic Faith. stay strong, stay safe and take care of yourself. God bless you! 🙂 ❤️

love,
in the peace and love of Christ,
alison ❤️

I don’t think it’s a case of not doing something right. Who knows why God touches one person one way and someone else another way? Remember Mother Teresa’s protracted dark night? And, actually, these feelings are secondary. They’re very nice gifts, but, as you know, the number or intensity of such experiences don’t measure one’s holiness.

Most important is that we remember God’s love for us and that we trust that He knows what He’s doing – His ways are soooooooooo far above our ways. In His good time, He touches us in the way He knows is best for us.

God bless,
Dan

that’s how I feel sometimes too! 🙂

I think that may be true about being in a small room… when we’re close to the Eucharist it somehow affects us more, or maybe that’s just my experience… but that’s what I’ve found.

Betsy, that’s soo true!!! 😃 every single Catholic church I’ve been to… whether it’s a beautiful cathedral or a simple little parish… it just feels so holy and also warm and welcoming just because Jesus is there 🙂

I don’t think it means necessarily that you’re doing something wrong 🙂 I mean… there is also a chance that you are, but I think it’s sometimes a blessing to feel nothing yet still be there to love God. I think that pleases Him very much… when we maybe don’t feel any consolations yet still come and visit Him. That’s love like He showed love. So…don’t worry too much about the feelings! 🙂

God bless.

I don’t know if I would be able to worship Jesus at adoration if I didn’t feel His presence there. I am so afraid of offfending Him through idolatry, I think the only way I could be sure that He was there (the host was truly consecrated) is if I felt Him. I am humbled by people who can meet with Him and worship Him there by faith alone.

It pains me so much to think of how deluded non-Catholic Christians are regarding the Presence and other Catholic beliefs. I was so brainwashed against Catholicism that I didn’t think they really worshipped Jesus at all, they just kept Him dead on the cross. I was so surprised to find that He is worshipped and thought of in ways that most protestants do, only their ways have Huge and very important pieces missing.

While I can look at most protestant sects now and admire that they have been able to stick to the truth (for the most part) for so long and just cling to Jesus by faith. It is just such a sad sad work of the devil that the True Presence is stripped away from them.

But, God has His ways…

I am going to Adoration again today after I meet with the Msr. He is a very intuitive (?) man who read my soul like a book the last time I met with him… this makes me nervous all the more!

Please pray for me!

The more you go to Adoration, the easier it all gets 🙂
I think at first, most people need some sort of a sign so that they will believe… cause it is difficult to believe in the real presence especially if you were a Protestant. But then later on, as you get used to Adoration, it will be easier without any signs or consolations.

I’m humbled by those people too.
I think He knows what we all need… He knew you needed to feel His presence there and understands you didn’t want to commit idolatry. Usually the people who feel nothing, they already believe and God just wants them to grow in blind faith. There will also come a time when EACH person has to struggle with blind faith. Whether they ever had experiences at Adoration or not.

I feel the same way 😦
I also don’t know why God lead me to the Church and not my Protestant friends who are really good Christians and would love to spend time with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament if only they knew… I guess we can just pray for those who don’t yet believe in it.
But, God has His ways…
🙂 amen.

haha 🙂 Oki I will! that’s wonderful that you’re going to Adoration today again. And it sounds like this man might make a good spiritual director if you’ll ever be looking for one 😉

God bless!
