If the first lady happened to be at some event I was at, I would certainly not boo her, as that is tasteless and rude. But I would not applaud her either. I would likely keep silent. Or do that “silent” applaud, which is lightly moving hands together, but noiselessly.

Queens may well be above politics now, but the First Lady has very much become a political position. Michelle Obama represents here husband more than she represents America.

I think what they did was incredibly impolite. Historically, and I think it holds true in this administration, the First Lady is above politics. She might champion one or two causes for social good, but otherwise stays out of the fray.

That some people chose to boo her speaks to the crudeness which has enveloped America during the past 20 years. We have become increasingly rude towards those we disagree with. I don’t think this is a good trend.

Canada is somewhat like Britain I think in that the way that politicians treat each other here are rather raucous and scathing affairs. This extends to the way people treat politicians, and booing at public appearances is not uncommon.

I am not sure that America is not becoming more like that now too. I don’t know if the debates are as raucous, but little informalities, like Obama returning his being addressed as Mr President with a repeatedly and pointedly referring to John McCain as John, sets up an environment where booing is more acceptable.

Mrs. Obama took an active role in campaigning for the election of her husband. So, it seems to me that people took it as “fair play” to show, very vocally, their dissatisfaction with the whole thing - a bad President, and the person who campaigned for this bad President. I mean, if you put yourself out there campaigning on behalf of someone, you become a valid target of criticism for the failure of the person you campaigned for. That’s my take on it. If Michelle Obama didn’t hit the campaign trail back in 2008, campaigning for presidential candidate Barack Obama, this would be a different story, and I would feel sorry for her being booed. But given her involvement in campaigning for Mr. Obama, I fail to see why she should be spared of criticism now.

She deserves all the booing she gets. I don’t know how did we get to the point of First Ladies and abortion activists having joint appearances. Mrs. Obama is disgracing her office.

All American men and women who have jobs, pay taxes, like family entertainment and most of whom are extremely patriotic. NASCAR is a family sport. What a catty remark.

Because of the cause she was representing that day, that would be the reason I would NOT boo her. This initiative that Michelle Obama and Dr. Biden have undertaken together is a very worthy cause and one that should be supported, even the people in charge of it, regardless how we may feel about those people away from this particular cause or occasion. I don’t agree with Michelle on a lot of things, but I do support the effort she is making with helping the soldiers and military families in general. There is a time and place to voice one’s disgust with her husband’s politics and Michelle’s views on abortion and other topics. This day and place wasn’t one of them.
