I a new at this but I seem to have the same problem with my 13 year daughter. She wears it like you Betsy, but coming from Spanish /mexican background she know it’s supposed to be the way your mother said…kids…😃
By the way, in Mexico most of the veils are long and as a man happened to think they are beautiful.
I have been attending the Latin mass with my children in Arizona for more than four years and love it.

When and where is this statement from Rome?
The Ecclesia Dei Commission sent a private response to a letter stating that, in the specific circumstances of the letter’s sender, it was acceptable for him to fulfill his Sunday obligation by assisting at an SSPX Mass. This response was then circulated over the Internet until the Commission issued the statement posted here: unavoce.org/articles/2003/perl-011803.htm.

In general, a person cannot fulfill his Sunday obligation with attendance at a Mass celebrated by an SSPX priest.

Hope this helps,

Scott

I attended my first Latin Mass today at Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Jersey City, NJ. It was beautiful, breath taking, mind blowing, moving, emotional etc.
I would like to attend this Mass one Sunday. I am a little afraid of getting lost as I don’t know Jersey City very well. I was sorry to hear that it was not well attended. I know they run an ad in our local diocesan paper every issue.

There are many resources out there about the Tridentine Mass. One site I like is www.dailycatholic.com.

A few questions have risen since my post RE: The SSPX and fullfilling one’s Sunday obligation. A stated earlier, I am not a member of the SSPX. I attend an indult Traditional Latin Mass (Missal of 1962). The recent post to the Una Voce web site in which the full text from Rome is quoted, is exactly as I said earlier. One MAY fullfill one’s Sunday obligation in the “strict sense” of the word if doing so is due to devotion to the Traditional Latin Mass (TLM) and if one does not hold to a schismatic mentality. Rome also went on to say that one may give financially at a SSPX Mass as one would at an indult TLM or at a Novus Ordo Mass. That’s all.

Next up: Regarding my use of the phrase “TLM”: Please. I know it is not a different rite. As a Traditionalist, I think I represent the vast majority of Traditionalist Catholics. I am fully faithful to the Holy Father and to the Magisterium. Were I to meet John Paul II, I would kneel to kiss the ring of the Vicar of Christ. I know who he is! I hold all 21 Church councils to be true councils of Holy Mother Church. However, I, like most Traditionalists, dislike the Novus Ordo (Mass of Paul VI) intensely. But I have NEVER, nor will I ever, call into question the validity of the Novus Ordo.

As a father, I have a tremendous responsibility to raise my children in the Faith. That being said, I have looked closely at the last 40 years and have seen nothing but disaster. The aftermath of the Second Vatican Council has lead to a massive decline in every area of the Church. Therefore, I raise my children with the Mass and the sacraments of their grandfather and ancestors, the Baltimore Catechism, the Douay-Rheims and the RSV-CE. Just because I do not want my children to endure “On Eagles Wings,” standing in line to receive in the hand from an EM or watch liturgical dancers, does not mean that I am disloyal or schismatic. I’m just a Roman Catholic (convert) who takes hold of the indult granted by the Holy Father. Hope that answers a few questions.

I don’t see how anyone could attend an SSPX mass, knowing that they are in schism… and maintain that they don’t have a schismatic mentality themselves, that they are simply devoted to the Old Mass. Seems like dangerous mental gymnastics to me. And a shame that the Church hasn’t been more definitive about this, but they really are bending over backwards in hopes of drawing the SSPX’ers back.
Regarding my use of the phrase “TLM”: Please. I know it is not a different rite.
I never assume what anyone knows or doesn’t. I thought this was a useful thing to point out, as many arguments here seem to develop over subtle, almost trivial disputes over terminology.

For what it’s worth, I think the term (capital-T) “Traditionalist” is divisive too. I think it implies a desired separation from Church. And I don’t think it does any good to even express a dislike for the Latin Rite Mass (1970). Dislike the abuses, sure. But to express dislike of the mass itself is playing that game of mental gymnastics again. My opinions only.

A.Pelliccio, I too have attended my first Mass of the 1962 missal and have experienced its awesome sense of worship. I was not with my wife and children at the time, but now I must return to our suburban parish with its novelty and shortfall of reverence. (neither of which I blame simply on the 1970 missal)

I struggle with knowing that I must give my children a true Catholic upbringing that connects them to the ancient Faith but are surrounded with banality and frivolity (the pastor’s joke time is right after Holy Communion).

Thank you Latin Mass Only and others for clarifying some earlier statements. It serves as a good reminder to me (us) that light, not heat, are needed in Traditional vs NO discussions.

Latin Mass Only,

I, for one, was not questioning your faith or alligence to the Church or the Holy Father, I honestly wanted to know the details of the declairation you mentioned reguarding attending SSPX Masses, I try to keep as current on these things as possible. I personnaly attend a Parish in Portland Oregon that has TLM & NO Mass every Sunday, plus TLM on 1st Fridays and Saturdays.

Mary its actually quite simple to get there, Im from bayonne and dont know JC very well either. Mapquest gave me terrific instructions. heres from the churches website holyrosarychurch.com/directio.htm
Oh, thank you so much. I hope to get there one day. It’s just that I sing in the choir and I feel so guilty when I miss our Mass.

Mary its ok I usually attend noon mass at St. Andrews in bayonne with my GF who sings by herself. She wants to go to the mass with me next week so shes leaving it up to the organist (who used to sing before her).

When I first started attending the Mass in English in the '70’s the host was placed on the tongue and no wine was offered. Then after a while Communion in the hand became an option around 1978 or something like that. And shortly after that we were offered both the Body and Blood of Christ at Mass and ended up having Eucharistic Ministers to help the priests.

I do have a couple mantillas. I ordered a purple one from eBay around Ash Wednesday both because it’s my favourite colour and it’s the liturgical colour for Lent. And I just got a pink one that the same seller claimed would be appropriate for Easter. Then again, I wanted a pretty colour-not just plain white even though I’m still single.

I wasn’t exactly going for a hot pink veil to wear at the Mass but I just love the colour. I thought it was going to be a pale pink from looking at the photo.

I did see a little girl with a pale pink mantilla and a married woman with a brown one. But most the girls and single ladies wear white on their heads and the married women wear the black ones. In fact I think the purple one was dark enough to make me look married so I think I’ll use it only during the times that the liturgical colour is violet like Lent, Advent, or Septuagisma.

I do carry the veil around in my purse so it would be with me when I go to Mass.

-sparkie:)
