That is nice. I have never heard of a church having 2 names before.

It is not uncommon when two parishes have been merged, as is the case here. In 1949 a piece of St Agnes was carved out to create Our Lady of Fatima; In 1980 the terretories were recombined and both names retained.

I got the impression from reading the article that 18 parishes were actually merged.

thank you.

The article indicates that 18 churches in Cleveland have “closed their doors” “in recent years” – presumably the parishes were consolidated with one or more parishes.

But the St Agnes-Our Lady of Fatima’s A Parish History page relates the specific history that I mentioned. (I do not know if any of the 18 parishes have recently been coalesced into StA-OLF)

If I’m not mistaken, 50 churches were closed in 2012 and only 12 were reopened, so way more than 18 parishes went down.

From the parish website:
St. Agnes + Our Lady of Fatima is a visionary Catholic Christian Community. As a diverse parish, we embrace Africentric worship, Christ centered hospitality and missionary service. Sustained by the wisdom of our elders and energized by the spirit of our youth, we come together in faith as a church family to give witness to the liberating message of the Gospel.

Hopefully they can help bring peace to the lives of struggling black folks in that tragic city. Many neighborhoods in Cleveland desperately need God.
