Three children saw the Virgin Mary repeatedly in 1917 in Fatima, Portugal, are all undergoing the process of being canonized as Catholic saints. The Church has just completed the first phase of the beatification process of the last surviving child, Lucia, who died at 97 in 2005. The other two children, Jacinta and Francesco, who died several years after seeing the Virgin Mary, have already been beatified in 2000 and buried in the basilica built at the great Catholic shrine where they saw the Virgin Mary. It is hoped that Pope Francis will finally canonize the two younger children who saw the Virgin Mary when he visits Fatima in a few months. Those officially declared Catholic saints are ordinarily beatified and called blessed before they are finally canonized in a further step and named saints.
