First RCIA meeting tonight!

Not too sure this is the right section to post this is! Basically, tonight I am planning to go to an RCIA meeting at my local catholic church which I’ve been going to for about 2 months (I was baptised/ confirmed as methodist at 15). I am VERY nervous about going! As I am 17, I’m sure that there wont be many, if any, people my own age and I’m pretty concerned that I won’t know what to say/do.

Has anyone done RCIA here, or has any advice as to how I could get over these nerves because I really would like to go, but at this rate I might not!

I am in RCIA myself. We have had 4 classes now.
The first seemed to be more of a meet and greet type.
Calm down, its a friendly atomosphere!
How much you participate is up to you. You wont be in the spotlight unless you choose to be.
The ages will vary depending on the # interested etc. You may well be the youngest but dont let it bother you. Your there for a reason!

Don’t be nervous - you may find you have alot in common with those “old foggeys”. I have never gone thru RCIA as I am a craddle Catholic but I run the program here across 4 missions/parishes. this year we have a grand total of two people - both young in thier early 20’s.
 
God is calling you, get going:thumbsup: I have been a sponsor several years ago, I am a cradle Catholic. In our class we had people of all ages and it was a wonderful experience. God bless you.

Congrats! I was UM baptized and confirmed. I converted at 20 or 21. Have you talked with the Parish to see if/how you could be incorporated into the youth confirmation program? It would be worth a shot to see if some things you could join people close to your age on.

If not, then stand tall and be proud of what you are doing at 17. Sounds like you have a good head on your shoulders to me!!! PM me if you need a “pep-talk” 🙂
 
I think it’s wonderful you are going to go to RCIA. Don’t worry about having to say or do anything. Just go there with love in your heart and I’m sure everything will be good. I came into RCIA last December and so I sort of felt like I was crashing the party, since they had already been at it for several months, but they all made me feel at home. The only reason I drop out was because of some personal issues and events, plus I wanted to start from the beginning. So now I’m back this year and couldn’t be more excited.

I’m quite a bit older than you (haha) but I did RCIA last year and I was SO nervous in the beginning as well. We had a very small class (only about 8-10 people max) but once I got there and got it started, I felt right at home. The first class was just kind of introducing ourselves and telling some of the reasons why we felt moved to attend the classes. The instructors (we had four, including our parish priest) all introduced themselves as well and made it a very light-hearted occasion to put everyone at ease. Just remember that you are most definitely not alone in this journey and, if you’re anything like me, you’ll make some really awesome friends as well. It’s okay and natural to be a little nervous but I know you’ll shake those nerves in no time! 🙂

I am going through RCIA right now…you are definitely NOT alone!
I have started a group on this forum for people going through RCIA this year…and I am also blogging about my personal experience. I am hoping that both can help other people.

Hi Lauren!

First of all, welcome home!! We are all so excited that your coming into the Catholic Church. At some local churches in my town, there is a lot of range in people - from young families to older couples, and everyone inbetween!

Thanks for all your replies, I may reply to them separately later but I’ve got to leave for the class now! I’m still quite nervous but I know it’s what I want to do, and the only way I can do it! I will let you know later how it went, I have no idea at the moment how many people it is!

Keep your basic mission in mind: to get closer to your Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Go with your eyes and ears open. You are not drafted into the military, but only inquiring into the faith. You may leave at any time. Yet, questions will pop up - maybe many of them. Take some writing material to jot the questions down as they occur. You may ask them later, or do a little reading on your own for answers.

Get a copy of Catholicism for Dummies. This is an excellent introduction to the faith that you will be able to refer to for years ahead. I learn something each time I page through my copy.

As to the ages of the others in attendance, you might be surprised.

My second RCIA class is in just a few hours. I was so nervous before my first one last week, and at one point during the class, the idea to leave right then and there crossed my mind. That didn’t happen, and i really like it so far. I’m already looking forward to our next class session. 🙂

Anyways, i’m sure it’ll be great for you. Let us know how it goes!
 
I’m having my first RCIA meeting tonight aswell I’m nervous too, but I’m sure it will pass by the end of tonight.

It actually coincided with my college classes and I tried to contact the director, but nothing…so I’m skipping school for RCIA. 🙂

Depending on the demographics of your Parish and town, you’ll be pleasantly surprised as to the number of young people going who will be going through RCIA with you.

Congrats on coming Home and best of luck on your journey.
 
its ok:) im only 14 and i am the only member of my family going to RCIA all by myself (my mom drops me off) 🙂 so ur not alone. i’ll pray for you

No bad things will happen. You probably won’t have to say anything, but possibly your name. The older people don’t know what to say, either, and if they think they do, they are wrong.

Go kinda early, sit near the front, smile pleasantly and just go with the flow. The Lord has you.
 
Just keep focusing on what God has called you to do. I went through RCIA in 2009 and those who taught the class and my parish priest made me feel right at home. Don’t worry about what to say or do just relax and be open to the message being delivered to you.

I’m sure you will be welcomed with great joy by the others, especially the old foggies! Ask loads of questions and soak up everything you can. Most people there will not be used to active participation learning since they have been out of college for so long, so help them out!!! I’m praying for you to have a wonderful time learning about the “True Faith” and I hope you join the high school youth group even before you are Confirmed at Easter Vigil…😉
 
You’ll do fine 🙂 Yes, take a notepad and a pen, in case you want to take notes. Depending on the format of the program your Parish uses, you might be given handout materials. We were given a weekly handout to read and there were some personal reflection questions on each one. Since our class was small, we took turns reading aloud the handout in class and then had discussion time. Father started each class with a Prayer and a verse or passage from the Bible.

I loved RCIA class and still go back to my handout materials if I have questions 🙂
