Given that they are proposing changing their name to “Rhode Island,” I don’t really see what the issue is.
The issue is it was not call Rhode Island originally, it was call Providence Plantation so why the change now. The name was incorporation with the beginning.

Why was it call Providence Plantation, was it about slavery? No
But that doesn’t matter. What matters is the movement.
“Whatever the meaning of the term ‘plantations’ in the context of Rhode Island’s history, it carries a horrific connotation when considering the tragic and racist history of our nation.”
Apparently, we as a nation can no longer make distinctions about how words are used and mean.
“every book has been rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street and building has been renamed, every date has been altered.”. - Orwell

It’s just one more example of the ignorance and semi-literacy which underlies political correctness in general.

Why do it at all? Are people so sensitive that hearing the word plantation makes them drop to the floor in a fetal position?

According to Wikipedia Amerigo Vespucci, whom America is named after owned 5 household slaves, perhaps we should be thinking about changing the name of this country while we’re at it playing silly games.

If Rhode Island wants to change its name to “Tiny State” I wouldn’t care. I’m not from Rhode Island.

I’m not sure how well known the entire name was anyway.

I have been seriously thinking of getting some plantation shutters for our house but will probably forgo that now knowing some poor soul might pass by and see them in the windows and have a conniption fit.

But it’s not concentration camp and if you didn’t even know plantation was it’s official name until today then again why bother? I’ll tell you why it makes people feel better but does NOTHING to actually make things better. But it seems that people love a good show

The title of this thread is misleading. Maybe VA and PA will join the list of states and stop being commonwealths.

Did you know that there was a legislative proposal to change the name of Mexico City? It failed.

It’s not at all known even by most Rhode Islanders i would bet.
I live in New England, Believe me we all know about Roger William and Providence Plantation.

Just as we have visited the site of Plymouth Plantation.

‘That’s mighty [pick a color] of you!’

Are you personally offended by the word “plantation”? Does RI have slaves? What’s your point?

I’ve toured a former plantation. The tour guides referred to those who worked there under pain of corporal punishment as “servants” and “bondsmen”.

I am offended as a New Englander that they now want to change the names of Plimoth Plantation and Providence Plantation. That is what they were called in 1620 and 1636. The official name incorporated is State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.

If you are not a voter in a state or city considering such change, you don’t have a dog in the fight…but I bet that ain’t gonna stop anyone…I’ll pop the corn!

From almost 20 years ago:

"It took two years for members of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs to persuade Oregon lawmakers to remove the word “squaw” from the state’s maps, which are filled with places like Squaw Meadow, Squaw Flat and, here in central Oregon, Squaw Creek…

“Squaw” originated in a branch of the Algonquin language, where it meant simply “woman,” but it turned into a slur on the tongues of white settlers, who used it to refer derisively to Indian women in general or a part of their anatomy in particular."
