I didn’t read all the responses but to the OP:
It looks as if you went to the new mass (the novus ordo or “N.O.”) where this is commonplace. The NO liturgy is not the Catholic liturgy per se but an ecumenized version of it. For the authentic Catholic Mass you’ll need to attend the Traditional Latin Mass (TLM) (or EF - extraordinary form) whatever you want to call it. You can then experience the Catholic Mass as the Saints for centuries have celebrated it. Best if this is done by a priest of the FSSP or SSPX since sometimes Diocesan Priests may incorporate things that may not be approved according to the traditional rubrics.
