Fisheaters shutting down?

I wonder if it would allow access to the Babel portion of fisheaters.

I’ll agree answers can be all over the place, but you get to where you trust some posters and I’ve gotten a lot of helpful feedback here when I needed to ask something of my fellow Catholics.
That is true. I do agree, a person can get some helpful feedback and there are good Catholics who frequent here alot and give very good answers. I have received some myself but many times mixed in with those good answers there can be some answers that could lead someone not well catechized or just seeking out Catholicism astray. That would be just because there is such a wide variety of religious beliefs, persons and denominations posting here.
Where would you direct them? Aside from the Catechism?
Definitely as you said the Catechism of the Catholic church but I would also include the The Roman Catechism, which I personally find the wording beautiful. Also, the New St. Joseph Baltimore catechisms when you just want “the facts”,Vatican websites, The New St. Thomas Institute, The Summa Theologica, Father Mike Schmitz videos, Jeff Cavin Bible studies…

The non forum sections of Catholic Answers and Fisheaters are good places.

As far as the forums go, they can be very helpful and it is not that someone shouldn’t come here. You can get some good answers but you just need to remember not everyone here is Catholic and many of us Catholics were poorly catechised, so answers could be our opinions or be wrong. I come here because I enjoy discussing the faith with others but it is the same with anything on the internet, when talking to someone and you have no idea who they are, what they believe, what they have been taught, there needs to be caution.

Well, I wouldn’t recommend CAF to other Catholics I know, for as @MagdalenaRita said, answers are all over the place, but that’s usually the common ground with internet forums.
Good answers are often tangled and/or buried underneath false informations, biased views, loony stories, questions born out of anxiety, the ever recurrent innapropriate topics, the list goes on and on…

My fear too. Everyday, CAF becomes more a platform for American Politics than Catholic Theology…which could eventually jeopardize its existence.
Some posters seem to think American politics and Catholic teaching somehow line up, which is beyond absurd.

Archives can generally only archive the publicly accessible parts of websites, not the parts requiring login (although some apparently allow major search engines access to that which would otherwise not be served).

I admit, I basically wrote off fisheaters in light of the bad review they received on Catholic Culture years ago. That and I also came across a thread in their forum dedicated to bashing CAF. So I really saw no reason to go there. It’s good to hear from others that the site doesn’t appear to be as bad as I had assumed. I’m happy to be wrong about it.

I’m still always uneasy about Catholic sites with anonymous authors of content, though. I like see the person’s name and credentials.

Thanks! I thought I had read that she was purposefully anonymous, but I must have misread.

I hadn’t realized she’s been posting new material. She has no “what’s new” section, no RSS feed, and the articles she’s written are categorized topically not chronologically so it wasn’t clear to me anyone was even paying attention to the site anymore. I stopped visiting it years ago due to this! She should really consider having a blog or something that at least alerts you to new material. That would keep her relevant among all the big names in Traddom.
What she desperately needs is a site overhaul. Of course, I doubt it can be afforded but it would go a long way toward helping FE to remain relevant.

I think part of the controversy is over the forums she hosts (and over which she appears to do very little moderation). Her traditionalist Catholic material is stellar but if you wade into the forum you see the worst of the Trad misfits. I’m talking stuff that makes Mel Gibson look sane.

There is a much worse Catholic forum out there where members spout antisemitism as easily as breathing air. I think since coming across that one, I tend to view FE a bit more generously. But in general I would give up the FE forums in a heartbeat (I’m not a member but at times peruse) if it meant keeping the fantastic material provided on the main site.

I just checked and she still has a sticky that essentially implores her posters to use dog whistles when discussing the powers that be who control everything, and who shall not be named… but we all know who they are (hint: they killed Jesus).

Out of curiosity, are we talking about one whose initials are SD?
No, but I know that one too! Just haven’t spent as much time there. The one I’m thinking of has CI has its initials… I’m almost frightened for any Catholic to unwittingly end up there.

Gah!
