London, Jun 17, 2008 (CNA).- The Times of London reported this week that the Anglican Church is facing a new crisis with 500 priests threatening to leave if women are ordained bishops.

The newspaper reported that the priests have said they would leave the Church if the proposal is approved at the next general synod scheduled for July of this year.

Many priests said they feel betrayed by the proposal, and the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams and Archbishop John Sentamu of York have responded by saying they would work for a compromise rather than allow female bishops, even though both are in favor of female clergy. more…

There are no priests in protestant denominations. They are preachers, pastors, ministers, etc.

Might want to re-evaluate what you know about Anglicanism. There are priests, bishops, archbishops, etc. There are still very many Anglicans that hold fast to Tradition, and Apostolic Succession which it received from the Catholic Church. They are, however, breaking away from the Anglican Commune or becoming Catholic. Here is an example of it.

There are also many former Anglican priest who have converted and are priests in the Catholic Church now. Some are even married.

I think the poster’s point is that, although they call themselves priests, they are not priests in the same way as Catholic priests, as the Anglicans do not have valid apostolic succession (and hence do not have valid Holy Orders).

Those former Anglican priests who convert are not automatically Catholic priests. They have to be validly ordained (as their previous ordination was not valid in the eyes of the Catholic Church). And this only happens after a dispensation from Rome for the celibacy requirement.

Agreed, I wasn’t trying to say anything to the contrary. Also, not referring to present status of Anglican Church, more looking to it when it was close to possibly reuniting with Rome. It was looking quite possible until the decision to begin ordaining women. I am definitely not an expert just some of what I have recently seen/read.

Even this news report is stating the Anglican communon may be nearing an end. The declaration comes in a 94-page book, titled “The Way, the Truth and the Life,” from the church leaders meeting at the Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON) in Jordan. Sad to see a religion implode! More reasons we need to pray for our Anglican cousins.

No problem! Just making sure everything was clarified. 👍

These 500 Anglican priests that are threatening to leave, I wonder where they would go? Back home to the Catholic Church, perhaps? 🙂

One could only hope, may God light their path. It wouldn’t surprise me if many are considering it.

It would be nice to see some of those beautiful Cathedrals come back to Rome as well. Would love to see a Gregorian Mass in Salisbury, York, Duhram, Ely, Cantebury, etcc.

Don’t count your chickens. Those gleefully awaiting the end of the AC may wait a long time. GAFCON isn’t going to break with the AC.

Those ‘500 priests’ exiting may find that their jobs are immediately filled by 500 new priests, many of them women, who are well received in the USA. In the AC, there’s no priest shortage.
