Flogging adulterers and adulteresses one hundred times

Anyone who comes to this conclusion is missing part of the story. If Jesus said do not kill her, he is in violation of Mosaic law. If he said do kill her, he is in violation of Roman law. What he did was dodge the issue while placing a new understanding in the minds of people. We are NOT to punish people for their sins. We can punish for their crimes. They are two different things…

crimes/sins sins/crimes in ancient israel adultery was both. jesus would’ve been required to have her judged by i guess the sanhedrin or jewish courts and according to guys like valke2 they wouldn’t have ran her out of town to be stoned as capital punishment was rare under their court system, so the story doesn’t even jive with history. jesus imo would not simply allow her to trot along on her merry way with no temporal punishment for a crime commited. it’s this idea of thinking that has christians today thinking they can simply do whatever they want and it’s fine they are sealed to god, obeying the commandments means nothing because we are not accountable at all.

it’s funny if you find fault in a fellow christian today, say he’s cheating on his wife, this is the verse that gets thrown back at you and it probably never even happened, jesus probably never even said it. don’t judge me or tell me what i’m doing is wrong, “he who is without sin” remember?

i think criminalization of adultery is a good idea, you are worried abut kids? i am willing to bet the rampant social acceptance of adultery and divorce in our society has destroyed immeasurable times more children than say a kid’s dad getting striped for stepping out. there should be some humiliation with sin, it changes people outlook.

And you just ignore the historical fact that execution was reserved for Rome. Had Jesus said, like Pilot, try her according to your law, he would be guilty of Treason.

I can tell you if your actions are sinful. I cannot judge why you commited them. Did Jesus say judge not lest ye be judged and by the measure that you judge you shall be judged or is that made-up too?

So are you God now? Can you judge what will change a man’s heart? When adultry was a crime, it was still committed. UNtil the 1970s in Alabama, if a man caught a man in bed with his wife, he could legally shoot them. Did that mean that it did not occure until that law changed?

I am not saying that the decline in social values is not damaging to everyone. I am saying that violence is not the answer. All it does it breed more violence. Why is that hard to grasp?

no he wouldn’t have been, they would’ve tried her in the sanhedrin the same way they tried jesus and if found guilty probably would’ve been meted out a much less harsh punishment or turned over to rome for punishment.

the story doesn’t jive imo, not with the record we have of manuscripts, not with jesus character as a law abiding jew, not with jewish history.

are you sola scriptura now? context, i can cherry pick any one or two verses out of the bible to try to prove anythin, heck i proved to a mormon the other day my dog is a god right from scripture.

no i’m not god, let’s not get cheeky we were getting along so well. why do i need to know a mans heart to find his actions against the moral law? fact is i don’t, his heart can be between him and god, but when you start down the slope you are going it reaches all the way to murder, rape, stealing etc… these things are against the law because they taint society and hurt people, so does adultery, how much welfare money do i pay because a dad decided to take off with his secratary and abandon his wife? i don’t care why he did it, but i think he should be held accountable and criminilizing adultery would do that.

Re-read the story. jesus was not presented with the option of her being tried. It seems like it is either lynch-mob justice or she has been tried.

Show another verse where Jesus said it was acceptable to physically punish a sinner.

Good for you. The fact is that Jesus wants to to admonish the sinner not beat. Teach and correct not destroy and harm.

Adultry had been criminal in most of the states in the US for years. It is still agains the code of law for the US milatary. It has yet to stop anyone. Further, the beatings and stonings in ISlam have not stopped anyone, either. Study the psychology of criminals and you might understand why. The person who will not commit the crime because of fear of punishment would find other reasons not to commit it as well. The man who would commit the crime dispite the punishment is not worried about the punishment, even if it is death.
