I have just reviewed the thread with close attention to her replies to you – I thought maybe I missed something. I would characterize @TheAmazingGrace’s conduct as both spirited and measured, the combination of which constitutes a sort of amazing grace.

This is a difficult topic for some. I am on both sides of the fence so I can empathize with both.

Common sense.

Sit in your basement and watch porn for 24 hours straight.

Then go out and murder someone.

Have fun convincing a jury that the murder you perpetrated is no more a crime than the porn you viewed.

I have been actively trying to stop using pornography for five years. I attend group meetings, go to confession frequently, try to pray and do holy reading, and yet despite all that it still takes next to nothing to implant thoughts in my mind that drive me to look again.

I commiserate with you my friend.

I overcame addiction to heroin… Yet try as I might, porn has its jaws locked into me and I still struggle against it daily.

I’m not sure if I’ll ever be able to master sins of lust - week after week after week I have to confess them. My libido is just strong as a bull, I have a sex drive like you wouldn’t believe. A Benedictine monk told me to be thankful for my healthy and powerful virility, but at times I wish I was impotent.

I think you missed the point which was that porn is very destructive to far more souls than murder. Porn sends you to Hell. And porn is very widespread. Our laws reflect a materialist view of the world. The same system of justice says abortion and same sex marriage is a right. I wouldn’t appeal to that system as the basis of morality.

I don’t care what system you appeal to.

Porn is simply not in the same category as murder, ever, period.

It is a putrid vice and mortal sin.

But saying it’s as bad as murder helps nobody. It makes you look like a raving religious fundamentalist.

We’re not talking on a strictly spiritual, legalistic level.

We’re speaking on a real life, dynamic and physical level as well as spiritual.

Strictly spiritually mortal sin is mortal sin.

But when talking about applying legislation in a State to moral evils, one needs to understand that certain things are more wrong than others. So in the context of a discussion about banning porn legislatively, saying sin is equal to murder is logically absurd.

In the context of a discussion on moral theology, saying porn and murder are essentially equivalent is much more appropriate.

Not at all. That is a modern view reflecting the triumph of materialism. In the past capital crimes included rape, sodomy, and heresy.
 
The date on the calendar doesn’t change anything, only people do. The pornographers have gradually lowered the bar on what is ‘acceptable’ over the decades. In this case, yes, it’s at Roman Orgy level. Porn should be banned.
 
What form must this knowledge take? What obligation does the person have to find this knowledge? Must they be consciously aware of it, or does the natural law knowledge suffice?
