For the Media, 2 Criteria That Go Beyond Ideologies

Vatican Official Points to Truth and Justice to Communicators

ROME, JUNE 12, 2005 (Zenit.org).- Truth and justice are the two criteria the Church proposes to professional communicators so that the media will be at the service of understanding among peoples, says a Vatican official.

Archbishop John Foley, president of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, made this proposal Friday when receiving the participants in the ecumenical meeting on “The Church in the Digital Society.”

The meeting, which ended today, marked 10 years of activity of the European Christian Internet Conference.

“Truth and justice are two criteria that do not represent an ideology or a specific confession, but belong to the sphere of the whole of humanity and are a necessity for which every corner of the earth cries out,” Archbishop Foley said. . . .

“Truth”?!? “Justice”??

I thought “manufactured controversy” and “destroying the evil Right” were the tools of the trade. 😃

Quite true, but I don’t see that establishing truth and providing justice are the jobs of news agencies. Those two seem to be the tasks of secular governments. To whom are we to turn for justice - the Fox News Network or to our elected officials?

Justice begins with individuals, clergy and the private sector. The American revolution was preached from the pulpit and promoted by broadsheets and the press. Lincoln meeting Harriet Beecher Stowe remarked that her book sparked the Civil War.

Justice is not handed to us by elected representatives. We should not rely on them. That is the European view. Rights bestowed by the state. The American view is the individual lends power to the state. If the people are not just, it doesn’t matter who we elect.

A very long time ago a very wise old man named Confucius said, “don’t tell me about your laws, tell me about your judges”.

It’s a two way street - the insane interpretation of law by social agendists (is that a word???) has done great harm to the nation as a whole; and if a sense of justice and fair play doesn’t exist in a people, the entire national character becomes weak and falls. Someone else remarked during WWII, the war for Britain was won on the playing fields of Eton. Those kids had learned dependence, trust, honor and responsibility towards one another.

Today the object is not how you play the game, it is to solely win…there is a major difference in the character of men and women raised with winning at any cost vs.achievement.

Sheesh. Any wrongheaded spin as long as it serves the liberal agenda, eh?

Uncovering truth ought to be a primary function of the press. Instead, they seem to spend much of their time ignoring truth so that they can perpetuate controversy.

And where does it say in the article that the press should “provide justice”? The only purpose of your glib remark is seemingly to provide yourself a strawman and an opportunity to take an unsubstantiated shot at Fox News.

Rather, a press that used true justice as a rule for focusing it’s efforts would be able to find and highlight instances of injustice and thereby serve mankind.
