Oh happy day–last night saw the first football game of the year! Today is new years day for me.

Make sure that, whenever you watch a football game, you remember that the players are probably making enough money to feed lots of starving people. Why won’t they donate their money to do just that? Hmmm… Does that mean that football fans and fans of any sport where players make a ton of money are an accessory to sin?

Also football is a bloodsport.

This is also not a socialist country – yet, that is – and it’s not anyone’s place to tell someone else what they should or should not do with their money. It’s their choice. It’s also a free country: If you don’t want to watch football, change the channel.

I didn’t realize making a lot of money was a sin – no matter how you make it unless it’s illegal, that is. This is also not a socialist country – yet, that is – and it’s not anyone’s place to tell someone else what they should or should not do with their money. It’s their choice. It’s also a free country: If you don’t want to watch football, change the channel.

Would Jesus want to watch people beat each other up for the sake of money? Would he want them to hoard it all when so much good could come from that money? I’m thinking no.

Once again, people give Jesus the finger for the sake of their viewing pleasure.

The NFL and its players actually do much excellent charity work. As we had the Super Bowl here last year, I can tell you first hand that they are big into literacy programs. They remodeled and donated books for an inner city school library while here. The players actually went to the school and did the work.

There is one player, I forget his name (think he is on the Dolphins), who grew up with a struggling single mother. Now that he is making millions, he set up a foundation that helps struggling single mothers buy homes. His mom was the first one he bought a house for.

The NFL does tons to support our troops overseas. They arrange special set ups so that deployed troops can watch the games, support packages from home programs… etc.

Doug Flutie has his own foundation that helps fund autism research. His son has the disorder.

Why don’t you actually get educated before you assume all these men are bad people? I am sure there are lots more who do quiet charity work without blowing a trumpet about it (remember that passage from the Bible, about not being a hypocrite and doing it for show?) and whose goodness most of us will never know.

There are some bad apples, but there are in anything.

But there are lots of good, generous guys, too.

Holy…! Did you just accuse me of “giving Jesus the finger” because I like to watch football? Can you breathe the air up on that stratospheric horse of yours? I am sure there were sports in Jesus’ time. I don’t remember reading any condemnations of sport in His words… I mean, I’ll check again, but I don’t think they are there.

Most men have competitive and physically aggressive instincts. Organized sports have long been a way to control those by giving men a socially approved outlet for them, and thus keeping larger society more peaceful and stable.

No one on that field has not consented to what is going on. There are no victims, unless you get someone who is intentionally breaking the rules and trying to hurt people. And trust me, anyone who goes around face-masking every game will quickly get kicked out of the league.

Larowyn, are you one of those people who believes we should beat or train the masculinity out of men, not allow them to have it, in order to better society? Because that is how you sound with your condemnation of “blood sports.” Never mine that mixed martial arts or boxing is much, much more of a blood sport than football.

Calling someone a cafeteria catholic just because you disagree with them is, I am pretty sure, against forum rules… never mind that the Church itself has no prohibition against watching football or any other professional sport, so you are wrong to call anyone a cafeteria Catholic for thinking it is alright.
