I didn’t realize that someone’s enjoyment of watching football made them a cafeteria Catholic.

How do you know some players don’t do that? How do you know they don’t do what they can to help the poor? I believe Warrick Dunn, a running back for Tampa Bay and Atlanta, has been known to do that.

Danny Wuerffel, while no longer in the NFL, was a Heisman Trophy winning QB in college, and has opened a ministry in New Orleans.

The NFL is not just made up of the Pacman Jones or the Terrell Owens. The problem is that the media sometimes likes to only cover those causing problems.

Martial arts is not a bloodsport when used for self-defense or while sparring, since the former is what the martial arts are intended for, and the latter is for training purposes. Boxing as a sport and auto racing are bloodsports.

There are plenty of sports that are fun and competitive and in which injury or death is not an expected or intended outcome. Beating up someone is not very manly.

If you yourself pick and choose what you consider to be a sin and what Church teachings you accept, then you are probably a cafeteria Catholic.
 
I wasn’t aware that the Catholic church took a position on watching/playing football. Then I guess all the priests that are down on the field at all the Notre Dame football games are condemned???

Who said that priests are perfect? If they don’t consider such violent acts conducted for the sake of someone’s entertainment to be sinful, then there is certainly something very wrong going on.

Edit: get me a priest who is a football fan and I’ll convince him myself.

I have a priest who wants to go to a football game with my dad. He is a big football fan.
Enjoying football is not a sin.

I PLAYED football for YEARS. It is NOT a bloodsport. It hardly hurts at all with all those pads. I had a guy twice my size knock me to the ground. Either the padding was THAT good, or I am just THAT tough, I got up right away and taunted him to give me some more. (He was my team-mate and we were practicing, encouraging him was beneficial for both of us)

The Church does NOT condemn football.
Why would they?
Once again you’re proving that YOU are the troll, not me.

Sorry, he passed away several years ago. He would come over to our house on New Year’s Day to eat gumbo and watch football and gasp drink a beer with my daddy.
 
wow, it must be difficult to be so mean and harsh that you cannot allow other people to find enjoyment in a sport. Also, you are focusing on professional football will most of the posters are talking about college football.

Perhaps it would be best if you sold your computer and gave the money to the poor, then you would not find so much spare time to try and suck the joy from other people’s lives.

I can’t wait for opening day kickoff myself, so I can dress my girls in team garb and scream for my team.

Are you suggesting we mandate charitable giving? How does that work with our free will? How will we get to heaven if we are not free to choose to give?? Forced charity is NOT Charity. Or are you just a bit jealous of their salary? Its a sin to covet your neighbors goods.

What about the industry that football produces? What about the vendors, the janitors, the shops that sell the football gear? If we do away with NFL, what about all those jobs??

The former NFL player that I knew (ds went to kindergarten with his dd) was one of the most humble men I knew. He remembered the sacrafices his mom made to raise him, and was making sure his kids learned the value of hard work, and the benefits of being charitable.

I think you need to wake up and smell the :coffee: Youth can only be an excuse for ignorance for so long. Soon you’ll have to grow up.

Perhaps it would be easier for you to put down your Cross and not follow Jesus, since his way is not the easy way.

Besides, college sports are just a proving ground for professional sports anyway.

Haha! I’m sure the 50% of the world’s population, which lives in poverty, are sinning by being jealous of people who can eat and live comfortably in that case. Is that why you abstain from donating to the poor?
