“No religion” can also mean agnostic or those who beleive in God but don’t belong to any Xian denomination or other religion.

Atheists may respond, of course, if they pray. If they don’t pray, why are they answering.

Ohhh! Right. The chance to ridicule is not easily passed up. 😉
and apparently the chance to play victim is not too easily passed up either.

I saw nothing in the post that ridiculed anyone. The poster simply stated their position-he never said anything about the choices the rest of us make.

In an open forum, any question that asks “How do you…” presumes that the respondents do (whatever), and means that those who don’t (ewhatever) aren’t part of the group to whom the question is directed. Obviously.
What non religious person prays? Won’t praying automatically put them in at least a “theist” capacity? The question included non-religious, so I answered.
Another similar question that was asked on this forum went something like “Why do you hate Islam?”. This, obviously was directed to people who hate Islam. If you don’t hate Islam, there is no reason to respond.
I have been wondering if I should post there saying that I don’t hate Islam 😃
If you don’t pray, there is no reason for you to respond. Well, there was a reason, which we already talked about. 😉
Of course there was. But, maybe by how you phrased your question, you didn’t understand that non-religious persons never pray.
And by that agnostic comment, maybe you really didn’t understand what the term “no religion” means and are now trying to dig yourself out of a hole…maybe? Just asking.
You’ve had your fun. Moving on.
I have already established that I wasn’t here to have “fun”. Another snide comment…that’s 3 now.

Wow, with this thread I’m reminded what Gandhi said about (some) christians.
Is me being an atheist that threatening to you? Why don’t you take your own (and others’) advice and move on.

Hmmm. I have never thought about this before, strangely. I pray the Jesus prayer either 10 or 20 times (20 if I pray it in Russian as well, which I usually do, as that is the language I originally learned it in many years before I actually became Catholic so I got used to it in Russian first), and the Hail Mary in English and Spanish (I’m used to doing both from going to both masses at my home parish). A lot of time, though, is spent in silence or near silence that is befitting before God. I pray in quiet thanksgiving for the continuous mercy and blessings of Our Lord that I know I don’t deserve. I struggle a LOT in prayer (hence the change in religion in my profile, though I’m as Catholic as I’ve ever been, I guess), so my supplications to the saints also increase, for an increase in faith, in peace, in understanding…in all those things that they are such wonderful examples of. I begin and end everything with the sign of the cross, of course. I imagine that is pretty standard. 👍

****My habitual prayer life consists of (1) Morning Offering; (2) Liturgy of the Hours; (3) Daily Mass; (4) 1/2 hr. of contemplation twice/day; (5) Evening Liturgy of the Hours; (6) Night Prayers; (7) Examination of Conscience at midday and at night-time. Lastly is my very favorite prayer mode: while settled in bed for the night, I scrunch over from the edge and invite Jesus to sit besides me and then I proceed either into conversation with Him and/or go into my “listening” mode. I learn so very much about myself at this time. :gopray2:

I pray sometimes like a spare of a moment. While driving in my car, in the shower, when I am taking a walk… I talk to jesus off and on during the day… I don’t pray as often I should have… We pray tho everynight at supper time together as a family… My husband prays everyday and on his knees 3 or 4 times a day… He told me i should always be on my knees to pray and sometimes I do… Most of time it is at night when I am laying in bed and getting ready to fall sleep… I mainly pray when I am alone…

This is a common misunderstanding that people have about Catholicism we do not pray** to the Saints directly. We always pray directly to God and Jesus** now we do ask God to allow the Saints and Mary to intercede and help us and that’s what we mean when we say I pray to St. George or St. Anthony. Say I lose my wallet and St. Anthony helps people find lost things. I will pray this prayer. God please if it is your will allow St. Anthony to intercede on my behalf so that I may find my wallet I pray this in your name amen. We never pray to mortal men. It’s just like in Islam where Mohammed is mentioned in the prayers but Muslims do not pray to him they pray to God.

It’s interesting this prayer question came up at this point in my life because I noticed a significant change in the way that I pray since I started learning Turkish. I have a lot of Turkish friends and they always glorify God in everything they do. I’ve noticed that I’ve started incorporating that into my life as well. I use words like Bismillah on a regular basis now. I noticed by doing so it has made me a better Catholic. I’ve been able to find the most commonly used phrases used by Muslims but I’ve been unable to find audio so I can learn how they sound and I want to be able to understand what my friends are saying. Does anyone know where I can find basic Islamic phrases with audio?
awesome and do u pray to God directly or go through some saint? an assortment of saints, some ppl pray to saint george, saint antony, etc. great men but normal men.

I’m hoping that we can keep this particular thread friendly. I didn’t start the thread to criticize how anyone prays. I hope everyone will jump on board and will not pick apart anyone’s response, as has been done here.

I should have been clear about that in my OP. Of course threads have a way of taking off on their own, so…
You misunderstood what he’s saying he is not criticizing the way we pray he is asking why we pray** to the Saints** and he’s wondering why we pray directly to the Saints when they are mortal men and women instead of praying directly to God. So it’s all along the lines of that mistaken belief that people have that Catholics worship Mary that we always hear from non-Catholics.

I pray every night before i go to bed. I start off with a personal heartfelt prayer of thanksgiving and then pray the Rosary.

No it isn’t like the muslim prayer but thanks for sorting that out.
Muhammed (pbuh) is not mentioned to intercede for us, if his name or Mary (pbuh)'s name or Noah (pbuh)'s name is mentioned it isn’t for intercession rather because we are reciting Quranic verses while we pray and if their name is mentioned in that verse of the Quran we are reciting then we obviously continue reciting however it is NOT for intercession.
Get me? 👍

Here are a few phrases:
AL-HAM-DU-LLILAH
BIS-MILLAH
ASTA-RGFULLAH

My mum is VERY pro-Mary but she is a protestant just as I was. Is there a big difference between the way protestants pray and catholics pray?

Incorrect. Agnostics do not believe in god. The ones you are describing are broad-term Theists and Deists. Agnostics say that there is not enough evidence to make up their mind about god, so they are undecided, waiting on proof. One can even be an agnostic atheist. Agnostic is about knowledge, atheism is about belief.

Your question addressed a broad range of people. I was one of them. I don’t pray so I told you that.
Maybe you should have phrased the question to exclude non-religious. What’s so difficult to understand?

Ouch, another snide comment by the catholic….that’s 2.

Agnostics (even on this site) say that they believe in “a god or gods”, but they don’t know what to believe about it/them.

At any rate, “talking to myself” was a dig. Of course you’re above all that. And this.

You’re only a victim if you let the other person make you one. Telling the other to take a hike isn’t playing victim. It’s letting him know that you know what he’s about.

Of course, now he’s all about being the victime of my supposed wrath. Ridicule and then claim that the people you ridiculed are being unreasonable when they point out your horrid behavior. What an ancient bullying tactic.

Maybe I was unclear. TMaybe I posted under the wrong reply. The question about why we pray to saints wasn’t the post I was talking about.

Agnostics (even on this site) say that they believe in “a god or gods”, but they don’t know what to believe about it/them.
Incorrect.

Please cite your proof for this.

Definition:
Agnostic: a person who holds that the existence of the ultimate cause, as God, and the essential nature of things are unknown and unknowable, or that human knowledge is limited to experience.

Your definition is flawed and if agnostics on this site claim that they believe in a deity, they are theists. Please prove your definition and where agnostics said this.
At any rate, “talking to myself” was a dig.
No it was not. If I don’t believe in a god, then essentially I am talking to myself.

How do you know my thoughts when I post anyway? Did you hear god’s voice? Did he tell you what I’m REALLY thinking? Now that was a dig.
Don’t let Atheists threaten you so much! We’re just people.

Now get over yourself and move on with your thread.

Assalamu Alaykum (peace be upon you) Bear Claw,

wassup?
I thought an agnostic is someone who believes that something is out there but isn’t sure what faith he wants to be labelled in. Am I right?

Ridicule and then claim that the people you ridiculed are being unreasonable when they point out your horrid behavior.
Again with the ridicule…seriously…and horrid behaviour? I think that`s 4 now…

Just get over yourself and move on.

You’re the one that screamed “ridicule” when all he was doing was answering your question. That’s where the nonsense started.

When will Christians in this country wake up and realize that the fact that disagreement with our faith is not ridicule or harassment?

Hey there 🙂

That is a Theist, if you believe in one god, or in more broader terms, a Deist believes i some sort of Deity, but can`t label it.

This is the dictionary def:

Agnostic: a person who holds that the existence of the ultimate cause, as God, and the essential nature of things are unknown and unknowable, or that human knowledge is limited to experience.

Peace be with you too. 🙂

Thank you! That`s too true…I hope kalt gets this soon, so that this thread can get back on track.
🙂

Agreed. Muslims sometimes do this as well-it is very narrow-minded. Everybody has different views.
