For Catholics: Would you consider yourself anti-protestant?

Just curious;)

I have been reading alot of threads that just catholics are posting and I have seen some things written that are very negative toward protestants so I pose the question.

Im not accusing–just wondering. I figure since catholics accuse us(not all of us of course)protestants of being anti-catholic---------would you consider yourself anti-protestant?😦
Actually, a recent poll indicates that a great many, maybe even a majority, on this forum are former protestants.

They are the pillars of Protestantism. I think Protestantism itself is erroneous because many of the interpretation contradict one another.
But they are the pillars of my beliefs… so if they are the pillars of protestantism then I must not be protestant…

As a Catholic I have encountered those who think ALL those outside the Church will be lost too even though the Church doesn’t teach this any longer.

Ignorance knows no bounds. Fortunately, neither does Christian love.
P.S, the Church NEVER DID teach that. The Church CANNOT teach error, not ever, past, present or future.

Oh, pardon me.

Unfortunately there is text in the Council of Trent that sure sounded that way on the surface. We have also had a barbaric past that could easily be viewed as totally intolerant and bigoted toward the plight of doubters and dissenters. I.E.: the inquisition for example. I fully understand the Church doesn’t condone the evil done by men though men wiithin her have committed great crimes in her name.

That is what I was referring to. I should have choosen my words better.

I agree it wasn’t an official teaching though.

An official teaching would be reflected more accurately by the following statement:

Dr. Art Sippo writes “[No salvation outside the Church] was reiterated at Vatican II in Lumen Gentium Paragraph 14. Now formal membership is the ordinary means of salvation, but the Church has always accepted that there can be extenuating circumstances and that one may be related to the Catholic Church less formally [this will include many Christians of other denominations]. Technically, all validly baptized persons are members of the Catholic Church.”

Also some honest seekers, who through no fault of their own, did not learn about the the Catholic Church will be saved.

People, YOU ARE YOUR BELIEFS. So if you hate a belief you essentially hate the person who believes it. I can tell you right now that what I believe is my very core. It’s WHO I AM. If I were to try to deny what I believe it would be like trying to cut out my beating heart without any antisthetic (I know I spelled that wrong). So when someone says they don’t hate me but hate my belief I first chuckle but then I am saddened by this because it truly feels like someone is saying that they hate me. I may not agree with the catholic faith on many levels but I in NO way hate it.
I just wanted to say that in a large part I agree with you. I think it is possible to disagree, and even disagree strongly with someone’s position, and still love them, but if you hate someone’s position, it’s usually a slippery slope to hating them. I’ve seen this in all sorts of ways and in every denomination. And it leaves me feeling deeply sad and, when I’m faced with it directly, very unwell. It doesn’t matter if it’s liberal/conservative, protestant/catholic, republican/democrat, gay/straight if you can’t see the goodness and the beauty in the person you’re debating with and respect their search and journey towards truth, above and beyond whatever issue you’re debating, then I don’t think Christ is at the centre of your motivation.

I think John 4 is an important reading in this issue. Jesus had all sorts of reasons to despise this woman. He didn’t he loved her and commended all that was good in her.

hmmmmmmmmmm, let put what you said in the words of a homosexual?

Christians, YOU ARE YOUR BELIEFS. So if you hate the Homosexual’s belief you essentially hate the person who is the Homosexual. The Homosexual can tell you right now that what It believes is it’s very core. It’s WHO THE HOMOSEXUAL IS. If the Homosexual were to try to deny what what it believes it would be like trying to cut out it’s beating heart without any antisthetic (I know I spelled that wrong). I may not agree with the Christian faith whether it be Catholic or non-Catholic on many levels but the Homosexual NO way hates it.

Now replace every instance of Homosexual with Islamic and you will have the Islamic version.

I was unaware that homosexuality is a belief…

My brother is homosexual. I love my brother to death and while I don’t agree with his decision I am in NO WAY in a position to judge him, his heart, nor his motives. That is up to God. But homosexuality isn’t a belief system. And those who chose to, even tho they have the urge, can turn away from it knowing it is wrong and deny it. I cannot do the same with my beliefs. So please, don’t try to put my beliefs in the same category as someone who struggles with the sin of homosexuality. They are not on the same level because they are two VERY different things… unless you are saying that my beliefs are a sin… Then that is another topic that you can feel free to start in another thread… 🙂

Good grief, what are the chances I would use the Homosexual card and you happen to have a brother for one? I have a brother that is one too. And get this, he’s a Protestant Apologist. Go figure.

But it does not mean that homosexuality is a belief system… it’s a sin not a belief… there is a distinction… you don’t find the church of homosexuality do you?

No, I would NOT consider myself to be anti-protestant at all. I was a protestant for 36 years before my jump into the Tiber last year.

Does a “Belief” neccessarily have to be associated with a “Church” or a “Religion”?

I am anti-Protestant towards the Protestant faith(s), but I am NOT anti-Protestant towards the person(s).

When you talk about protestantism and homosexuality then yes it is associated with a church or religion… One is a sin and one is a belief system… two ENTIRELY different contexts…

Please see my post above. You cannot be anti-catholic without being anti-the people who believe because they ARE what make up the church… Same with anti-protestantism…

Does the Homosexual believe it to be a sin? Some would say no. Some believe Christianity to be a scam to control people.

There is a significant difference in outlook between the Catholic and the person who interpretes the Bible for themselves, heck some people who call themselves Catholic do this.

The real Catholic submits his will to God and follows God’s belief so it is not of himself. The belief is not the Catholics so they are not equal, the belief is of God. Same with some Muslims and some Protestants.

Now for those Protestants whose beliefs are themselves, as their beliefs are what they have decided them to be. (I am not speaking of all Protestants, that is impossible) This is very common with the Bible alone, without any faith tradition Protestants. Without context to understand the Bible it is self understood by the person.

So if the person identifies themselves with the belief they will be offended when you attack the belief, as it is equal to attacking them. This is why so many self interpreting Christians react so emotionally when you get into discussions.

What I would stress is that we can attack the belief system without attacking the person, whether or not they personally equate it to them is how they have come up with their faith. If they personally have determined their own faith, then yes you are attacking both, if they have submitted to a faith system then, no there is not an equality but something they might defend, until you prove it wrong or they prove it right.

In Christ

I don’t consider myself anti-protestant, I just consider myself pro-God. I try and work with individuals not belief systems, such as sola scriptura, sola pastora, sola mea, sola etc…

Hate is a very strong word to use maybe you are angry?
Maybe you are feeling like you want to be accepted but not wanting to join the team?
Jesus said people will hate you because you love me.
Code:
When you 'rag' on someone else's belief you are ragging on them because that is what they believe. It makes them feel 'less than'... What needs to happen is if everyone took on the role of understanding and try to find out what someone is believing instead of attacking them you will find a MUCH better response.
Code:
We are not ragging on you just stating what our church teaches.

So don't say the whole, I don't like protestantism but I like the individuals because I tell ya right now. You hate my beliefs then you hate me for they are WHO I AM.

Yes a way of life like homosexalism is a way of life so it will speak as to what you believe and I pray for your brother to turn away from it as do you?
I'm sure you don't hate your brother but if you show him you are excepting his life style than you are giving approval.

I don't hate you! Dessert

So are you saying you are anti-Catholic?
Hate is a pretty strong word why not substitute anger.
You can love us but not like our religion but we can’t do the same to you?
I pray for your brother it must be hard to see him following that way of life with the threat of disease so prevelant.
Following a way of life is actually a religion to some. Dessert
